None of these say "zombie". A lot of the cases you pointed out are due to drug related side effects. There have been some scary drugs that are making their way more mainstream which in itself is just scary. And it's scary to see what people will do just for that high. As for the cases with mental illness, it's harder to explain those but with zombies being in the media and on shows more often, these cases are making their way to to the surface and being exposed. With the guy who ate his roommates heart and brain, it sounds like practice of a culture who do in fact eat those exact same parts as a part of their beliefs, but the guy himself sounds like a bit of a pyschopath. So in my opinion, there's nothing to worry about :)

I don't think the dead could ever walk, but a drug that could change people's mind state and behaviour is a possibility. I don't think there will ever be a zombie 'apocalypse' but the existence of a drug that consumes the mind and initiates thoughts of cannibalism could be possible! Duh duh duh!!!

You have no idea how badly that all of this stuff literally terrified me when it was happening last summer. Like I wanted to cry and I thought that the end was near. It didn't help that there was, of course, the impending doom of 2012 too that I was paranoid about. Obviously, I'm a bit of a paranoid freakazoid. I remember after the incident of the man eating the other guy's face occurred, the guy that I was seeing was going to Miami and I freaked out and was like NO YOU CAN'T GO THERE YOU'LL GET YOUR FACE EATEN OFF TOO! But really, the majority of stuff like this seems to stem from that Bath Salts drug. And if you want my honest opinion I think that that was the doings of the government. File There's also the conspiracy that the government "accidentally" released the chemical make-up of Meth in order to keep the country drugged and unaware of what they were doing. What can I say? There's a bit of a conspiracy theorist in me. Wink

I don't think it is very likely, and the COD/filmesque zombies are in my view an impossibility, but I suppose something of the like may happen on a smaller scale. Drugs, mental illness and possibly a virus could affect people in such way, but I'm skeptical about the idea of a zombie apocalypse. Either way, nice article and a fun read :)

I think it IS possible, if everybody got high on bath salts. I like playing FPS games that involve zombies but if it actually happened I would cry.
Remember, there's some crazy people out there that can accomplish crazy things...

I heard something about this - it is a drug, one that makes you ten times stronger, but gives you the urge to eat human flesh. I can't remember the details and I'm a bit of a hurry, but you can look it up on Google. I think I read it in a magazine.

I'm starting to think this could be a real possibility, especially with all the crazy things that have been happening lately. I was reading the comments on this article and saw that someone said that scientists in the US are actually TRYING to create the zombie virus? That's insane, but I guess it didn't surprise me. If they were ever successful, and there was an accidental outbreak, it would be terrifying.

I am a HUGE fan of zombie films and video games but the idea of it REALLY happening is insane/scary! I don't think I'd be anywhere near ready. I think the virus would start in America. If it DOES happen, I hope it doesn't make it over to Australian shores! We've got insanely strict border security, so I think I'm safe! ...for now ;)

Hasn't it been proven by scientists that there's no way a virus or pandemic could ever possibly spread so massively as in the case of a zombie apocalypse? The closest the human race has ever gotten to something that huge was the Black Plague or HIV/AIDS. I wouldn't be too concerned with this 'threat', seeing as how the cannibalistic tendencies zombies seem to exhibit aren't exactly something that would be beneficial to the human body's health, thus making it virtually impossible as a probable outcome for the human race. The body gets what it needs, including a diet free of its own flesh. Nice try, though. Living in Florida after that Miami attack was something I definitely enjoyed, everyone seemed a bit freaked in a way that was very amusing. Plus everyone who thinks they'd survive during the hypothetical apocalypse would probably be among the first victims to die/be infected. Nice to entertain the idea of such a doomsday situation, but I'd prefer Cloverfield over the Walking Dead any day.

Honestly I'm getting sick and tired of hearing about the supposed zombie apocalypse. For all those who think it'd be 'cool' or whatever, you're all nuts. Everything that's happened has been caused my drugs and/or mental illness. Any surprise? Not at all. People who suffer from mental illness can have a range of issues. Some of them can be violent. I personally believe that this is all getting media attention and belief for the 'zombie apocalypse' because for some strange reason people want it to happen. I feel that if it really does happen no one would truly know what to so. I have seen Dawn of the Dead and things of the like. If it does happen, which I highly doubt, the slow shambling zombies would be best otherwise it's like running from an Olympic track star zombie. Now, who would REALLY want to do that? Does the idea scare me? Yeah, but I feel this is all because people seem to have some fascination for zombies. None of it would be exciting. Think about it, if the zombies don't get you something else would! Then you'd probably be eaten by a zombie. Which I also have to wonder if that could even happen. I took a forensics class in high school. We had an entire section on death. How a body decays, time of death, etc. The time it takes for a body to decay isn't long typically. But this is all just my opinion, I think it's all ridiculous and glorified.

Personally I think a zombie "apocalypse" could happen. But I don't think it will be the living dead or anything like that and I don't believe apocalypse is the right word. I think it would be more like a disease that causes living people to change and to loose certain brain functions leaving only animalistic instincts. I think that there would have to be territorial issues, vitamin deficiencies, and starvation to cause them to begin to eat humans. I believe that though these happenings are crazy and awful as well as worrisome I do not believe they are zombies. I think they are simply drug and mental cases that people are having fits over because of the biting. But I do believe that an apocalypse can happen in other ways---solar flares, weather issues, economic collapse, revolution or anything like that. They would'nt be apocalypse per say but more like a life changer and therefore we should prepare because of issues like that. The more prepared you are the more likely you are to survive the rough times.

An apocalypse is not going to happen. I repeat, not going to happen. Things like this have actually happened before, just didn't get media attention. I'm pretty sure that police have even seen stranger than this but you don't hear about it because of course the media doesn't report it. A lot of cases deal with drugs and mental problems which isn't a zombie apocalypse or anything like that. So people should stop freaking out. It's seriously not the end of the world.

My only problem is that most people have forgotten about the ideal “patient zero”. And there is no physical or mental way to prepare for this type of outbreak. Nothing near zombies has ever happened before besides the Leapords and Ragged (nicknames for disease that can cause the skin to decay, and parts of the brain to shut down.) People who believe they can prepare for an outbreak are pretty stupid in my opinion. You’ll eventually run out of amo and weapons break, food is a no-no seeing as it’s one of the easiest things to get contaminated along with water, and how are you supposed to know what to do or where to go? Ragged people move rather slowly, having to think longer of how to get their legs and arms to move. Leapords can run, and they are known to turn into cannibals.

I also find a lot of these stories rather ridicules I know when I was a kid (up to 9-ish) I loved to bite people when I was mad or scared, or even just bored. I also find these stories to have an interesting timing. I know I had to have watched at least 6 crime shows involved in “zombie” like attacks before all these reports aired. So either producers can see into the future or people are just getting ideas, seeing as a lot of crime shows use real things such as drugs, weapons, diseases, over making it up. My favorite being ‘Castle’, where this guy was given drugs that made him forget everything unless told to do it; the guy who gave him the drugs put him in “zombie” mode and had him kill a guy by biting and ripping at the guy’s body. That episode came out in late April before Bath Salt dude.

It’s also a proven fact (and why people need to read warnings) that children and teens and now spreading into adults, are easily manipulated by game play and TV/movies. The more real things appear the more people (especially younger) believe it is real. Let’s not forget the people who have believed they have been abducted by aliens or possessed by a spirit. Not to poke fun or insult, but those things do happen. Zombies are today’s current trend, and that’s what people believe are going on. The more you worry about something the worse it’s going to be if it happens.

I think it's terrifying what all has been happening. I'm one of the people who doesn't want to believe that a zombie apocalypse is possible, but I can't stop thinking about how weird the world's gotten lately and all of these strange attacks are getting more common now... it's worrisome.

Oh, and I think it's funny that some people actually want it to happen (like gamers and zombie fanatics in general), the real world zombie apocalypse wouldn't just be a video game. If you lose the there's no coming back. Plus the majority of them don't know how to use a real gun or are as physically fit for running from a million or so zombies after their brains. Just saying.

That is creepy! People stabbing themselves and biting other people! I hope nothing like that happens near me. Sad And I really hope that an apocalypse never happens. Or at least doesn't happen while I am alive, even though it would be exciting, I would probably die!
