I think people aren't understanding what real rock is.
The real rock bands were from the 60's to the 90's and
now they've all seemed to be dying out and if all we have
left to listen to is this techno, hip-hop stuff i'd rather die out
with them, because guess what people I have the orginal Guns
N' Roses Appetite For Destruction CD from when it came out
in 1987 from my brother and I have it on my ipod. And In twenty years
from now its still probably going to be on my ipod. Why because they
music holds meanings to me that no-one else hear's. I don't care if
the Jonas Brothers take over the world because even then i'm still going
to have my Guns N' Roses, Aerosmith and Iron Maiden on my ipod, you
can take the person away from the music but you can't take the music away
from the person.

Well, for one, you used "I" through this entire article. It's not facts, it should be a journal.
You know what annoys me? When people claim that they know rock music, not truely, they don't know anything past the 2000. Or when they just know mainstream, rock. Which gets show cased far too much now that "emo" is the fad.
I personally think that rock isn't being forgotten, overlooked, or overshadowed, but the good stuff is.
And ville's_girl? True rock music IS classic rock... so that statement doesn't make much sense, ha.Though I do agree it's been not quite forgotten, but more like pushed to the back. Which still isn't a good thing xD

i love this article, and i think true Rock music has been forgotten a bit, but alot of good Rock and Heavy Metal bands are bringing it back, but you rarely hear classic rock anymore.

Well... where I am, rock isn't forgotten. I listen to a radio station that only plays rock and it's quite popular. You can see advertisements for it almost everywhere. Even more so then the more "hip hop" station.
Rock isn't forgotten.

Personally i think that people are not listenin to rock because alot of people want to be able to say they know all these popular hip hop rap and pop songs, normally no one would walk up to you and be like ahve you heard tht Motley Crue song, no they are going to ask about the most popular stars at the moment and for some odd reason they are never rock star, true rockstars. It's not really a new thing rock has been overlooked and kind of in the corner for a while, granted it was really popular int he 80's but that was pretty much all we had, so over the years Rock has slipped back into the corner while hip hop pop and rap have been on the mainstage for a while. Sadly i think people do overlook rock, but thats just what society is saying, but the rockers out there are going to change it, rock will rise again!

This could be looked at in many ways from my perspective.
Yes, the two 'huge' radio stations in my area only play beach music, oldies, and then pop, rap and their idea of "rock". They also play 3OH!3, but that is one band that has been sadly modernized lately...
We do, however, have one rock station that is simply amazing.
Also, our town has its own little indie-rock label.. so even if the majority don't realize it, where I live, rock is not dead. :)

New Zealand has an excellent range for good music on radio stations, fuck yeah. But I'm gonna have to disagree with you on the Edge bizzo lol.. I used to be a listener but got tired of the poppy bullshit amd thrashing of songs, I didn't like the DJ's too much. >.>
Hauraki's probably my choice. Your real rock station. 8]

Great article, brings up some good points, but I don't have too much of a problem with Miley or the Jonas Brothers. I know they're not rock, anyone with half a brain knows they aren't rock, so I'd just leave it at that.

i think rock is all of the above; forgotten, overlooked, overshadowed, and underappreciated. where i live, we have local radio stations and that in itself is saying something. i love out in the boonies, there's nothing but farms and the closest form of a small city is nothing compared to what an actual city is. at one point we gained a rock station. it played any and every form of rock. it played the older artists and the newer ones. it played old released hits as well as new ones. it played rock music, hardly any interuptions and pretty much made it about the music. you NEVER heard jonas brothers or anyone of that sort on that station. then, just like that, one day i turned it on and it was another 'greatest hits' station.

it could be just my opinion but it seems like rock is the only genre of music that stays true to why people go out and perform in the first place--for the music. i even notice that at the shows i attend from time to time. i've met a few members from countless bands and all of which say the same thing 'we do what we love, we're just regular dudes playing music.'

I really liked this article. A7X and other bands, (Im a HUGE A7X fan by the way:), are REALLY being looked over. People like Miley Cyrus, and the Jonas Brothers are ,I think, over popularized and many people are mistakenly putting them in genres where they clearly DO NOT belong. Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, Demi Lavato,(ect.), belong in the POP category. They are no where near rock.

In all honesty, I think people are kind of scared of rock music.
Look at that picture of Avenged Sevenfold, not a lot of people would want their childeren listening to them because of the way they look.
Even though, when it comes down to it, Avenged Sevenfold would be something better to listen to than half the stuff they play on the mainstream radio these days.

i hear music like, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Panic At the Disco, All American Rejects, Midnight Youth, Goodnight Nurse, Cood Charlotte, all the time. I have no problem with a radio station where i live. The Edge plays awesome music. Even if they have rap playing as well. They still have awesome bands.
Might i add Green Day to the list of bands.
I would say New Zealand has a good range for music on radio stations. The Edge is one of the best i have ever heard of!

And also for New Zealanders, if any of you are reading this. The Rock, is a good one for rock bands. We have a radio station about Rock Bands. And in New Zealand My Chemical Romance has been in the top 40, same with green day. No problems for listing to Rock Hits in New Zealand at all.

I have read this article twice as well as everyone's comments. It took a damn long time.

First off, let's get this straight: I listen to all types of music. Ranging from the several genres of rock and metal, to rap, r n b, rap, pop, country, and punk. I do not like to limit what I hear to only a few types. The only music I hate listening to, but am forced to on ocassion, is Tejano and mariachi music. (Although, I do like the way the accordians sound in the songs, and the spanish guitars are amazing to listen to. :D) I listen mostly to rock and metal because that's what I like more.

Secondly, this article was about "hit" radio stations not playing a variety of music. I don't think many people got that. And it's true, they mostly play pop and rap music. Radio is for the general public, (GP), and generally people like to listen to poppy hits. I do too. I am a fan of the Jonas Brothers and Taylor Swift, even if you don't like them, I think their music is good. Very rarely will I hear Nickelback, or even flippin' Creed on hit stations. What gets played most are the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, the Pussycat Dolls, I think I even heard some Lil Wayne on there once.

Now, our local rock station , Q 94.5 The Rock, plays mostly rock and classic rock/metal. For classic metal they play hair/glam bands such as Poison, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Skid Row, and the like. I have never heard metal, and I mean newer, heavier metal played on there. Which is a shame cause they are a ton of great bands out there that get no airtime.

Is rock dead? No, I don't think so. Is it overshadowed? Yes, by the GP. I don't care that they don't like rock or any of it's genres, I feel bad for them cause they are truly missing out.

As far as artists like Britney Spears who are popular cause they are media targets. I feel bad for Brit. Her privacy is nonexistant. She can't take a piss without someone, somewhere snapping a picture. I like her music, it's fun and poppy and you can dance to it. I don't though. Seriously, I don't, I look like a spaz having a seizure.

Now, as far as not listening to a band cause you feel they are now too "mainstream," someone used Flyleaf and RJA for example, don't let that stop you from liking great bands. Most likely, when the single fades out, their sudden interest in the band/s will fade. Or hey, may be some die hard fans will be born.

Okay, now are far as people critcizing Avenged Sevenfold: how would you know whether or not they make "shitty" music unless you actually invest some quality time really listening to them? Personally, Avenged is my favorite band. I don't care if you don't like them, but talking shit about them cause you know that they are the author of this article's favorite band, not cool. A serious waste of your energy.

Now, I don't believe in fighting over the internet. Its a waste of time, nothing can really come of it. Feel free to attack me if I pissed you off, I won't fight back, like I said I think it's dumb. I have better ways to waste my time than arguing with someone I don't give a shit about.

Music is music. At the end of the day, it is what it is.

Pop's always going to be the popular music.
I'm not bothered, I'm happy listening to whatever I want.

Hannah Montana isn't a rock star. People should stop calling her that. She's a POP star. I'm not here to criticize anyone though. I like your article because I understand where you are coming from.

Everyday, I hear pop/hip-hop music everywhere I go. From people who are listening to the radio in their cars, to the shopping malls who play those songs. And personally, this is exactly the reason why I DON'T LISTEN TO THE RADIO.

All the songs they play are of pop/hip-hop genres. I admit, I do listen to pop. But to listen to the same genres everyday is - well , I'd rather not picture it.

Thank goodness for the invention of iPod!

Music is music at the end of the day.

When you are in charge of a radio station you can choose what to put on it.

Also, whoever said about music being crap after the year 2000 hit, then said Avenged Sevenfold were a good example of that, Avenged Sevenfold formed in 1999. Just to point that out :D

Tbh though, bands like A7X get tonnes of recognision from the media in the UK. Their songs are constantly on the radio and on TV and they are always on magazine covers.

Good article though, I knew where you were coming from.

to Molko.Juice: ENOUGH! I said for everyone to stop saying shit about Avenged Sevenfold. I am not smoking anything for your information either! But enough! I did not ask what anyone thinks of Avenged. They are my favorite band so I put a picture of them. Now get over it! And I mean everyone who doesn't like them, get over it! I'm not talking trash about what you like but if you wanna talk trash about what I like them maybe I should.

Dinty thinker: thank for at least understanding what I'm saying and for saying that it isn't about Avenged Sevenfold. But Hannah Montana should be classified as pop. If you down load Bowling for Soup they are labeled as pop so why should some little Disney channel popstar be labeled as rock? It makes no sense to me and it does make me sick too
