Green Day's American Idiot - The Musical
The musical adaptation to Green Day's groundbreaking album American Idiot debuted at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in early September 2009. Before the premiere had even happened, the theatre had to announce a 3 week extension, American Idiot eventually becoming the top grossing show in the theatre's history.
Now the musical, adapted by Michael Mayer of Spring Awakening success is making its Broadway debut in April, ironically at the St. James Theatre.
The musical has already received rave reviews and the cast seems strong. Led by John Gallagher Jr as Johnny, the musical has no spoken dialogue leading the viewer to form their own interpretation as the cast performs songs from both American Idiot and the new 21st Century Breakdown album.
I myself have yet to see the musical but from what I've heard it's a must see. In November the cast recorded a new version of the single "21 Guns" with the band as a sort of preview of the musical and fans generally loved it.
With the musical debuting on Broadway in the coming months and new merchandise for sale through Green Day's official website, this year is shaping to be a great one for the cast of the American Idiot musical.
