WOW! I had no idea all this time people around me were doing the wrong thing. I was going to get a few myself since I wanted a pet. Thank you so much for all this helpful information.
Wow, that's a really good article. I knew nothing about that stuff. I had a neighbor who had hermit crabs and they did everything you told them NOT to do. Haha. Well, I don't know if they lasted too long either.
Thank you so much, I feel so well informed. I personally kept my distance from them, since they freaked me out when I was little. And I still will but i have more respect for these creatures. Thank you for giving them a dignified identify appose to a trinket that doesn't last very long...
when i was younger i wanted one and now i'm glad my mother got me a rat instead ( my poor rat got ill and passed away I cried for a very long time) cause i wouldn't have ended up killing the poor things
My friend was about to give me a hermit crab from California, but I told her that I didn't want a pet and now she's bringing me a necklace instead. And after reading this article, I'm really glad that I told her not to bring me one.
This article was very informative and well written.
aww this made me miss Sebastian. He was my hermit crab I got when I was seven. He lived for like five years. My little brother and sister got mad at me because they had crabs to and they all died. But not Sebastian. after a few year I got tired of him though and set him free. I got a hamster shortly there after. I wanted Sebastian back lol. Go hermit crabs!
Interesting article!
My freind has a three pet hermit crabs, but the tank he keeps them in is.. well over 50 foot, specially made and his dad took care of them and now he does. One of them is already 18, they are cute and fun to watch
Great article! I completely agree with you. I had a hermit crab and it only lived for a few weeks, maybe even less, and I wondered why it didn't survive. So I did my research and found that humidity and deep sand is a huge factor, as your article states.
If anyone is buying a hermit crab I highly suggest you read this article before making your purchase!
This was a great summer article because most people buy hermit crabs on a whim and do not realize what care they need.
A few years ago while on vacation, I saw several stores and stands that sold hermit crabs. They took horrible care of them, and it made me really mad. I already had a large fish tank at home, so I decided to find the most pathetic little crabs and save them.
I bought one about the size of a nickel that had three legs missing, one the size of a baseball that everyone was afraid of, an active one that was also “scary”, and one that you never saw come out of its’ shell.
After taking care of them for a few months, the little crab grew all his legs back after molting, the big crab was completely calm and mellow, the active one was still active, and the other actually came out of his shell and walked while I was watching.
All of them stayed alive until just recently; one of them somehow became ill and died, and the rest follow.
It does show that they can live for a while if taken care of properly. :)
I applaud you on this article. I myself have 7 hermit crabs in a 35 gallon tank, temp 73, humidity 80% with coconut substrate. This article is very good. I wish more people were educated in the care of hermit crabs. The number of hermit crabs that die each year especially during the summer is so high it's sad.
