German Shepherds are such beautiful dogs. I hope to get one someday. They make such gorgeous police dogs and can be very protective.

I had a dog who was half German Shepherd and half Alaskan Malamute. He was so nice! Thanks for the article.

I LOVE German Shepherds! I think their colors are just beautiful. I prefer the mostly black ones.

He is handsome. He is the dog that most of the people who come over say is the prettiest. He is the sweetest thing too.

German Shepherds have been in my family's line of pets for so long. They are so protective and will love you dearly. They truly are amazing friends.

I've never heard of a dog's color being linked to arthritis... Can you explain that a little more? Good pigmentation (darker color) is preferred in GSDs. I love the darker and black Shepherds myself. I would love to hear about it more!

Either way, I have spent plenty of my life around German Shepherds, and the lower rear end is usually indicative of hip problems, even if it is later in life. Another fact is that GS with more black in their coats usually have more joint problems in their life, usually arthritis.

From what I've read, the way a dog stands/how much rear angulation it has doesn't have any correlation between good hips vs. bad hips. All the German bred dogs that are certified for breeding have their hips and elbows x-rayed and certified clear of dysplasia. The majority of them are show line dogs too.

Some people don't like this line of dog simply because of their sometimes roached back, but I would not care as long as it/its sire and dam have their hips certified! Smile

I love my German Shepard, but there is one part I do not agree with in this article. You said the lowered hips in German Shepards is on just the "show-line", but it is actually a sign of hip problems, and/or is usually caused by the owner training the dog to stand like that. Another thing German Shepards are prone to is arthritis, and yeast infections in their ears. But it is true. They are loyal, wary of strangers, and very sweet and loving. I know when I am upset, my baby girl is right there cheering me up and giving me sweet kisses.

I have a German Shepherd and while she looks super-intimidating (especially with her really loud bark) she is the sweetest dog imaginable. She loves people but is a great guard dog.

My oldest puppy (I have two) is mixed with a German Shepard, and she is one of the sweetest things around. I've always adored their pleasant demeanor and way they look. Always brings a smile to my face every day, that puppy. :)

Thanks for writing this. GSDs are one of the best breeds of dogs and my personal favorite breed. I grew up around either GSDs or GSD mixes (half GSD and half another breed). When I was young, the family dog was a white GSD named Sturm. He was huge, but also one of the gentlest, sweetest and smartest dogs you'd ever meet. Unfortunately, we had to put him down due to cancer at only 3 years old. I now have a GSD/collie mix whom I've had for 8 years and has been my best and most loyal friend and bodyguard. I also owned a GSD/Bernese Mountain Dog who was also an amazing dog and my other best friend and loyal companion for four years until, just a week and a half ago, I had to put him down due to bloat, which was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. I still cry to this day when I think about him. It is hard to get over such an amazing dog and friend. RIP Strummer Joe, my amazing Mountain Puppy.
Anyway, thank you again for writing this article. German Shepherds deserve to be praised and Recognized for their loyalty, strength, intelligence and sweet nature when raised properly.

I too have a German Shepherd (just look at my avatar Laughing)
He is the sweetest and most loyal dog I've ever had, and I've had a lot of dogs before him but from different breeds. Some people are afraid of him, even my mom didn't want to have a German Shepherd because she thought they were mean, but he's been with us since he was 3 months old and now it's my mother's favorite breed. Aris is now 19 months old and we have a very special bond, my family always say that I'm his human mother. Very Happy

My family has always had a German Shepherd throughout the years. I guess it's a family tradition in a way because my dad owned one called Major before he married my mum. After I was born and Major was gone sadly before I could meet him, my mum and dad had another called Heidi. Now 10 years later, we still own the same dog and have another one but she's called Della :) They do make such wonderful pets and they're popular too. I guess I feel protective with Della though. Della is so loyal. She's always there by my side. She's affectionate and I seriously love her.

But yeah, great article! Very Happy

That's awesome! I have been obsessing and researching the breed for a few years now and hope to have my own GSD someday haha. Pistol is a great name and I bet he is as handsome as his personality suggests! :)
