Yeah, that was kinda rude about the gelatin thing :\ Some people don't know this stuff. It was really good and informational, but not all people are so graciously educated as you are. You needn't be insulting them.
Kmart., Shane McCutcheon, & erin.whatserface.: My girlfriend is vegetarian. This article is consistent with her diet and lifestyle. She doesn't eat or use anything for which animals died, e.g. she doesn't use leather or silk -- silkworms are boiled alive to make most silk, IIRC -- but she does occasionally use rough silk, which they don't kill silkworms to make.
Vegans, OTOH, use nothing that has any animal-derived components -- so in addition to vegetarian dietary and lifestyle restrictions, they use no dairy, eggs, honey, rough silk, certain wines -- just off the top of my head.
"I hate that I eat way less junk food than most vegitarians I know. Just because you don't eat meat doesn't mean you should eat a bag of chips instead.
- Finito-Neato"
Oh dear. I eat way too much junk food and I know it. :/ Oh well, never said I'd do this to be healthy, haha.
I agree with the others, towards the end it was a little pushy. Still a very, very informative article, though. I've been trying very hard to check labels and avoid gelatin; I don't eat PopTarts anymore, nor skittles or Jell-O brand gelatin, and I've always known that companies sneak meat into soups.
I think the fast-food fries part is common sense; the grease that they're fried in is from animals, right? I'm terrible for that, the past two years that's all I'll eat when I go to McDonald's. Sigh, I'll try to avoid them now -- but I don't see how they're made of cow feet...why the feet, specifically?
This was so helpful. MANY THANK-YOUS! Love, peace, and veggies. *dons hippie bandanna and does a merry little jig*
By the way, for people who've been debating whether or not this is vegetarian or vegan, I just want to say that I'm a vegetarian (I eat dairy, eggs, etc. but no meat, chicken, or seafood) and I avoid gelatin.
I guess what I'm getting at is: being a vegg is different for everyone. I know realistically that saying 'no' to meat isn't saving a million animal lives - as such, accidentally eating gelatin now and then doesn't make me cry and bash my head into pointy things. However, trying my best to avoid it is standing up for something that I think is environmentally- and animal-friendly.
But, hey, different strokes for different folks. ^.^ And thanks for handy reference.
pepperjack_cat - No, vegetarians choose not to eat meat.
Vegans choose not to eat foods/use products "in which the animal had to die to be made."
Like other's have said... isn't this more of a vegan diet? Vegetarian is just not eating meat it's vegan that stray from all animal products. Anyway, accidentally eating something with animal flesh in it isn't exactly a crime, it's an honest mistake, and it's only the vegetarians looking down on each other. People who aren't don't really care.
Very informative. It was a bit pushy in some cases but that doesn't bother me that much but for others who actually are trying to veg and didn't know might find that hurtful.
Like others, I would like to see an article about food substitutes beyond the tofu thing.
