This is fantastic and so true. Race-based scholarships will always be wrong, no matter who they cater to. My local community college offers a free ride to illegal immigrants as well, but I could only get a $150 grant from them. Scholarships should be based on individual merit alone. You shouldn't give something to a person because of their race.

I'm impressed that this article was the not the typical 'oh poor me and my white people problems'. I agree with a lot of what the user below me said. Maybe we should eliminate race based scholarships in general... Or at least have sites that exclude them, so it's easier for persons not of color to find financial aid.

Actually, unlike a lot of commenters before me, I'm going to agree with this article. I hate it when people claim all scholarships not specifically for PoC are for Caucasian students. That is inherently false; those scholarships that aren't specifically for PoC are, by default, for everybody. Everybody, people, not caucasians. I don't like this idea that Caucasians are the default. That implies a racial bias when most statistics clearly reflect that race has less to do with it than the tax bracket you're born into. I'm poor and white, and I want someone to tell me why being poor and Asian/Indian/African American would make my need for financial aid any more desperate or important. It just doesn't. Yet, all those poor minority students get to apply to all the same scholarships aimed at poor kids as I do, and they get a plethora of minority based aid. That is hardly fair. Like at all.

However, I don't think simply making scholarships for Caucasian students is going to help anything. I mean, that would racist, totally racist—read: sarcasm. I think race based scholarships should just be stopped period. Scholarships should be based on merit not the color of our skin. We're all the same on the inside remember? So we can all fight and claw for the same merit based scholarships. If we want to truly, I mean honestly, avoid racist scholarships then no scholarship should be offered based on race. Everyone should start out on even footing regardless of skin color.

So AMEN, article writer person! <3

There aren't any white scholarships? It's literally every other one that doesn't state another ethnicity. Some research on just about anything would improve this article extensively, but specifically on racism and scholarships would have been good. oh! and there are scholarships just for white people: they're sponsored by Stormfront and the KKK.

The same way there are, for example, Miss America and then a Black Miss America (I think that's what it's called, I'm not sure) is because in society white is seen as default and POC (people of colour) are seen as other. This is the root of racism, essentially. Miss America IS White Miss America. It's white privilege. So, basically any scholarship that isn't meant for POC already is a white scholarship even if POC have a chance to win it. For the most part those scholarships are won by white people, so in a way they are exclusive. You probably should have done some research because, ironically, you are coming off as quite racist with your "what about the white people?" attitude.

This doesn't appear to be a well researched article, because you would see how narrow sighted it is to approach minority scholarships this way. White people don't need specific scholarships, because they already receive a disproportionate amount of money, especially in private scholarships.

"Caucasian students receive more than three times as much in merit-based grant and private scholarship funding as minority students. "

"65.2% of all scholarship money goes to white students."

". Less than 5% of all scholarship programs and less than 10% of the total number of individual scholarships consider the student's race among their eligibility criteria."

This article reads as though it's based on bitterness rather than statistical evidence about scholarships, and looking for someone to blame, which is essentially the root of all racism and racial tension.
