Will you drink the Kool-Aid? - Comments

  • Oh, I watched a documentary about Jim Jones. He's scary.

  • Of course people would call him on it. It's not like the entire country has just turned Democrat. ;)

  • i know he won't go psychopathic, i'm just saying

    What if?

if he did something fucked up, would anyone call him on it?
    November 22nd, 2008 at 12:30pm
  • Just because he's a great speaker doesn't mean he's going to go all psychopathic.

  • Words are very powerful, as both of these situations show. I do agree that it's a bit worrying to think that some people support Obama without even knowing anything about his beliefs. Of course I don't think Obama would tell people to kill themselves, or that he's going to be a horrible president, just that people should know what they are supporting, not just vote for someone because they sound good or look good.

Also, reading that second Jonestown article and all the comments got me really angry. People make too many assumptions and irrelevent connections sometimes without even knowing what they are talking about.

  • Regan?

Oh yeah. Neo-Liberalism all the way.

    Jelly bean anyone?

And RunsWithVampires, do you have no faith in the power of the people? Over here, it's quite tense with the 'power of the people'. Sure, it's mainly aimed at prank phone callers, BNP members and child murderers but it's all the same. We're high on complaints and vigilante justice! Woohoo!

  • that is interesting

  • I think that inspirational speakers and good orators have so much power in their hands, and it doesn't always have to be negative.
You can compare obama to hitler and jones. But you cant compare him to Reagan or Martin Luther King? You cant compare him to Winston Churchill and Cesar Chavez.
Obama has great oratory skills, and so do many great people in the world. Dont sway your argument by focusing on the mass murderers of history.

You have an excellent point, but the way i see it, its more likely that he's an evil tool than a good guy ;)

and if i compared him to Regan and nice guys, wouldn't that be boring?

and BTW Martin Luther King Jr. was a republican. theres a link to that in one of my other journals

  • Jim Jones preyed on the weak minded...the people searching for someone to take them by the hand and guide them, to tell them what they should do.

That's exactly what the weak minded are looking for in Obama...people honestly believe he will be our Saviour. (*cough*)

His great skills are alluding people to the truth.

    -giggles-
And if he takes over the U.S and names it Obamaland I'm going to kill myself.^__^

To The Doctor: Yeah, they probably will let it slide if he fucks up...hell, I doubt he'll even have to talk his way out of it.
Sure, he'll lose the trust of people, but the people don't matter.
Many politicians have wormed their way out of their mistakes.

  • 1984 was written by a Leftie named Orwell. Little know fact.

And it was based on years and years of change and continuity. Obama isn't even in yet and he'll be in for a maximium of 8 years.

In order to have a society as described in 1984, there would need to be a Revolution and revolutions are never voted in.
    November 20th, 2008 at 07:15pm
  • Have you ever read Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell? It accurately describes why a lot of people will believe anything that they're told if they are riled up enough. If you shout loud enough and sound inspiring, anyone will do what you want.
Orwell shows this by the main character of the novel knowing that the Party (the leaders basically) promising the year earlier that there would be absolutely no decrease in the ration of chocolate which was then 30g and when it goes down to 20g, they have people thanking them for increasing it.
If Barack Obama gets enough power and enough followers, he could have them all believing that it's a good idea to commit mass suicide or detonate a doomsday device.
I fully agree with your point however, I'd just like to say that of course, not everyone is a mindless sheep and so it's unlikely that Obama would be able to make anyone commit mass suicide before he was stopped, but he could definitely make them think it was a good idea.

  • v Yeah, it was a mistake. A simultaneously tragic and hilarious one, hence the enormous amount of press coverage. (You gotta wonder how the information got out, though. Cheney's bat-cave is usually so secure. *g*)
    November 20th, 2008 at 06:55pm
  • Cheney is a comparably less important moron. And besides, wasn't that a mistake? Maybe it wasn't I don't know, I wasn't there.

Obama is really in the limelight here. And the limelight -nowadays - sees all.

Obama promised change and he was voted in for that. If he doesn't deliver, then he really won't last.
    November 20th, 2008 at 06:03pm
  • I'm surprised you related this to Obama, I'd be more inclined to think of God.
He's got the biggest cult in the world after all.
    November 20th, 2008 at 05:53pm
  • Your comparison is a bit extreme, so, as you can tell, people are going to be more critical of it. >_>;
But, yeah. I ssort of understand what you mean here, as far as his speaking abilities.

Oh, and when someone said that world leaders won't get away with murde or something...Eheh, Dick Cheney shot a guy in the face, and all he got was bad press coverage. =P
    Slightly different situation, but still.
    November 20th, 2008 at 05:51pm
  • Then, why exactly, is that a problem?

It's about time someone in power can string two words together. Doesn't mean he'll get away with murder because the whole world is watching him under a microscope. Everyone. If he fucks up once, do you think he'll talk his way out of it?

No, he won't. We are a highly critical society and we have so much satirical outlets to push that home.
    November 20th, 2008 at 05:40pm
  • i didn't say he was a cult, i was merely alluding to the fact that the man has so many followers mainly due to his great speaking skills.
    November 20th, 2008 at 05:34pm
  • I'd probably throw the Kool-Aid on someone's pants and say, "That's not supposed to be blue/purple/red!"

Cause I'm immature like that. But I'd end up making a joke out o f it.

Obama isn't insane like that other dude. He's got some smart people helping him think things through. Idk. =/
