Is idolizing people unhealthy? - Comments

  • I think everyones already said it...

It really depends how much you idolise them. I mean, I don't really idolise celebrities anymore, I used to, but I dunno, grew out of it? I guess. I mean, there's a level of it that is unhealthy, but at the same time to some extent it's human nature to look up to someone.

  • I think it depends on how far you take it. For instance, I idolize Billie Joe Armstrong because of his talent and personality, but I realize that he's a human like I am. Like that guy who killed John Lennon took his obsession with him too far. I would never shoot Billie Joe Armstrong.

So, it just depends on whether or not you truly see that person.

  • I think it depends. It's okay to look up to someone, but there has to a point where you know that the person isn't perfect and you can't be at a point where you're blindly following someone. That's when it gets unhealthy. When you stop thinking for yourself and you stop viewing that person as human.

  • The Opheliac: Yeah, I agree with you on that. People don't realize the stain that the constant attention and criticism puts on celebrities.

  • In some ways I believe it can be unhealthy, especially when you try and do your best to be exactly like the person you idolize. Also because some people do what you mentioned, they begin to feel less of a person because they're not like that said person they look up to.

I did that once and had to pull myself out of it because it did affect me in a great way.

I feel sorry for the celebrities in some way because when so many people look to them, idolize them, they then feel the pressure to stay in control, making sure they don't make a wrong move; resulting in dissapointing so many people.

  • There are some people who do compare themselves to their idols, but some people don't, I think it depends on each person, because everyone's different.

  • I think it's fine if you respect someone, but idolizing them is taking it too far in my opinion. I respect some famous people (Bob Dylan, Jello Biafra, Bruce Springsteen, John Lennon, etc.), but that's all there is to it for me. I think they're talented people, and some of them do or have done stuff that I respect them for other than their music.

If other people choose to be obsessive, that's their problem. I don't entirely care.
