We're all straight edge when we're thirteen. - Comments

  • Seriously, what's the problem with people looking up to someone and choosing not to do drugs? I say whatever it takes to keep them off. Any reason is good enough.

Though I do agree they shouldn't be arrogant. Saying they don't do drugs isn't exactly a bad thing. Whatever.

  • I do agree with you. I'm trying to stop smoking. I knew it was bad for me when I started the habit a few years ago.

  • I agree....to an extent, I guess.

  • Jinxeh- It needed to be said. 'Tis a wise piece of info, right there.

  • I consider myself straight-edge, personally.
I have read something that someone said about how if you're underage and not drinking you're just abiding the rules of the law. And I can see how that would be true. But I feel like a lot of kids who deny drinks and drugs when they're friends do them by saying that they're straight-edge isn't such a bad thing. They have the choice, and they chose not to drink I don't really feel like the age matters. It's the choice. (I hope that made sense).
I've never used it in order to "look cool" or follow a fad, because that's just not how I am. I do, however strongly dislike the kids that wear the X's on their hands and you find them drinking anyway. (In other words claim to be straight-edge to look like they're awesome.)
I get what you're saying I've just never looked at it as trying to be cool, I guess.
I think that when kids follow their idols in that sense for healthier decisions it's fine though. As long as they don't say stuff like "Oh so and so is straight-edge so I'm doing it", like boast about it to look like they're hot sh*t.
I like the saying at the end of your journal. (:

  • Yeeeaahhhh, asteroid. I love when I don't have to re-type things, because someone else already quoted me. *high-five*

If you're not twenty-one (or whatever the drinking / smoking age is where you live), you're not straight-edge - you're just following the law.

  • asteroid, well said.

  • I once read Jinxeh's opinion on this matter, and I think it needs to be repeated here. People under the age of 21 are merely following the law. It isn't until it is a legal choice do they truly become 'straight-edge'. Of course, they can believe being straight-edge, but they just technically aren't until they have the choice. That's what I think.

  • I'm fourteen and I'm striaght edge... it's not becuase the bands I listen to are or becuase it's a fad, it's becuase I've seen how it's affected my friends and my family members, and I don't want to end up like they have or like they will.

  • Paper Heart, you took the words right out of my mouth. I seriously wish I could make journals straight to the point, without a clusterfuck of my thoughts mussing it up.

Sorry if I sounded rude, but I'm not having a great day, and it seemed like you being judgemental towards SXEs. =/

  • I have to admit it... I'd rather this, for whatever reason than 'yeh I drink cuz itz kool!' you know? I don't care how or why it's promoted.

I've never understood the whole lifestyle of going out and getting really drunk and trying all sorts of drugs, etc. I just don't get it, it's not me. Yes, I drank when I was underage, but where I live it's not considered a big deal, and I've never actually been drunk (the one time I was almost drunk I was well and truly 18). But I consider myself fairly 'straight edge' even if I don't go around claiming it.

But as far as I'm concerned, no matter how annoying it may be, I prefer this to the opposite.

  • flawed perfection I looked on your profile to see who you meant and heh good choice :P
naw see you have a valid reason.
you've seen how a person's life has been affected and you've had exposure to it yourself.
    ofc thats respected mate.
its like you know when ppl run round going sex is awsome yay, just cos their mates do.
likewise running round saying straightedge is awsome and anyone that does stuff so to speak is a retard yadada, without any personal experience nor knowledge of how substances have actually affected a person's life, thats whats annoying.
    August 13th, 2009 at 01:47am
  • Flawed Perfection;;, I was merely stating that being straight edge should be a choice of health, and not popularity/social esteem.
If you're doing it for you, that's great.
If you're doing it to look down upon people, well, shove it. :/
I'll be frank, and you seem to be doing it for yourself.

  • I don't think BMTH is a good representation of a straight edge band... a friend of mine listens to them and if I remember correctly they have a song about excessive drinking.

But anyway, I agree. It's annoying when people think that just because they don't do drugs/drink that they are better than other people. And most straight edge kids under age usually end up drinking/doing drugs later in life. I know at least two people that got stright edge tattoos when they were 16 and they are now heavy drinkers. I'm also pretty sure they've at least smoked pot, and most likely have used harder drugs.

  • I don't mean to sound rude, but I am straight edge. I don't really give a shit what you have to say about it. I'm not straight edge because it's some fad or because my "idol" does it. My favorite person in the whole world does drugs, drinks, and smokes. But I don't want to end up like him, and I want to forget the part in my life where I was like him.
    August 13th, 2009 at 01:43am
  • Yeah, I'm all for kids not wanting to touch stuff like drugs. But they should be informed, and the decision should be an issue of Health, not Popularity.
