What is Selling Out? - Comments

  • Everyone's view of "selling out" is going to be a little bit different. I actually do beleive Green Day sold out, I mean they're getting a musical about one of their songs for crying out loud., but everyone has a right to their opinion and i respect yours, even if i don't agree with it.

  • Green Day were considered Sold Out when they signed to a major record label. They were banned from the place they used to play all the time (the name current;y evades me. They're allowed to play there again now, but back in the day they were banned because they 'sold out').

I think the term is stupid, but to me it's basically when a band/person stops being who they are and starts making music for the money. And while you do see it happen, and it can be upsetting, can you really blame people? Heck, if I had to choose between releasing a song I was passionate about but no one else would care, and a song I wasn't so passionate about but people would love... I'd pick the second one.

  • I think that selling out is when a band stops caring about the music and the fans and is all about the fame. Some artists sell out before their first album even comes out. They're just flashy mouthpieces for record labels and vessels to make money.
Of course I don't think Green Day sold out because they still make music that means something to them and their fans. They didn't even change their style of music, really, if you listen to Dookie and then cue up 21st Century Breakdown it's still the same chord progressions only they've added wider influences and ranges.

  • Selling out is when a band changes their sound in order to be more popular and mainstream.

  • I think its just a case of some bands like to try different things, different sounds, and that takes guts. Real guts.

Some bands don't and they are apparantly genuine, but sound boreing because they don't try new things.

  • Yeah. I think selling out is when a band change their style just to earn money and because they know that if they change they will get more fans and sell a lot more albums.

I don't think Green Day are sellouts just because they've tried new things. They did it because they wanted to and not to sell records.

  • I agree with for the birds.
But, if the music is still good, I don't care.
Going mainstream and getting more fans doesn't mean they're all of a sudden horrible, I hate when old fans turn on them. Sometimes they try to keep a claim on them too, saying things like "I've liked them since they started." and I believe that's just ridiculous.

  • I think selling out is when a band starts doing something for the money and fame and not for the music. I don't think Green Day sold out just because they became more mainstream and changed their style. People also said Fall Out Boy sold out, but I don't think they did either. Just because a band gets played on the mainstream radio doesn't mean they sold out to me.

  • If you go back and look at the time signatures, the notes/cords used and everything when it comes to Green Day songs, they're not as easy as everyone thinks.
Me and my amazing music had this discussion the other day x]
