  • Oh..
But I do agree that if you're going to use a picture off the internet, ask permission.

  • I think if you're giving a character background, you shouldn't give too much away. Then you already know the character too well, and it makes the story less exciting. I actually say don't post the character background. When you buy a novel, it doesn't come with a little packet or pages in the front giving information away about the character. Right?

Same goes with the pictures. Don't use them. I think it's alright to use a picture of your main character as part of the banner. Like some covers of books are. But some people post links to pictures of what the character is wearing in each chapter or everytime they change and such. You don't see that in novels either. Show the readers through your writing what the character is wearing. Leave a little bit more for the imagination.( :

  • In all honesty, if you put it on the internet for everyone to see it's sort of fair game. That's how the internet works.

Anyway, I always put links to the pictures I've used in my A/N (I haven't for my current story yet because I've only posted the prologue and it was as a bit of a trial type thing... next chapter will have the links). I'm not claiming for them to be my pictures, or myself and if the person ever found them and asked me to take them down I would in an instant.

and maybe I'm a bit bias cause I prefer it when it's people I don't recognise. I hate it when people have really famous celebrities as their original characters. It ruins it.

  • v Not all the "fake" looking ones are. Some people are just amazing at photography.. Like my friend Alex. She has amazing photos.
    January 9th, 2010 at 01:49am
  • Yeah. I would. So.

A lot of pictures are obviously photoshopped.
    January 9th, 2010 at 01:42am
  • v I agree.
    January 9th, 2010 at 01:41am
  • Well, I would be like.. flattered if it was meant to be a really pretty girl and stuff but I would still be a little creeped out. Maybe that's just me. =/

  • @HippieDays:
You'd be flattered if someone took your photo without telling you and used it for their story? What if the character they gave your image was a terrible person?

... And obviously somebody looks like it.
    January 9th, 2010 at 01:36am
  • All aside, the pictures I use are usually fake. As in, no one looks like that.

I'm not going to ask. But if they want me to take it down, I will.

    I'd be flattered.

  • @HippieDays:
What if they didn't put it up? Once you put it on your private networking site, all it takes is for one of your friends to put it in their album, and they may have friends you don't have in common, and that friend may copy it... Eventually it would all end up on google, whether or not you expected/ want it to.

    @Never.Fading.Rain:
    I agree. Be polite ^-^ .

Oh and because I look crazy L Lawliet deleted her comment... It looks like I'm talking to myself there :] .

  • I'm still not going to ask people. Just saying.
    January 9th, 2010 at 01:31am
  • Even pictures of myself and friends which have been posted on my social networking profiles and theirs are on google, pretty much everything is. I didn't put them up with the intention of them being used as character profiles in peoples stories?

I'd be pretty weirded out if I was randomly some one's character. >> At least ask, it's common courtesy.
    January 9th, 2010 at 01:28am
  • People wouldn't put it on the internet if they didn't want people to see it.

I usually just go to google. Its not weird.
    January 9th, 2010 at 01:25am
  • @L Lawliet:
I wasn't making an assumption, it was a rhetorical statement. Kind of put out there for thought. Sorry if it offended you though :] .

And yeah, true, I guess Mibba would get a bit angsty if it was illegal. But it kind of is, isn't it? Uhm privacy acts? Because at school we had to sign a waver thingy to give them full permission to reuse our photos and stuff. Or does that only matter if one can make money off it?

  • @Never.Fading.Rain:
I hate when that happens. Like in Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, I felt like Nick looked all wrong. Love Michael Cera though ^-^ .

    @WalkingOnBrokenGlass:
Hmm fair enough. I just guess I find it strange because my friend once used my picture without consent. Iiii was pretty pissed...
    January 9th, 2010 at 01:12am
  • Eh, I don't know.
The pictures I use for the characters fit them pretty well, so it just depends I guess.
I've used pictures since I started writing, so I don't find it all that strange.
    January 9th, 2010 at 01:09am
  • v. I don't mind people putting up pics, it's up to the author. I personally refuse to look at the character page because it ruins it for me. It's like going to see a book made into a film and all of the characters are nothing like you imagined. XD
    January 9th, 2010 at 01:08am
  • @WalkingOnBrokenGlass:
I know that. But I still find it strange. Wouldn't you? I have my characters in the 'character' part. But I got permission. It just reminds me of fakes if I just take the photo.

    @Never.Fading.Rain:
Truee... Because if you're a good writer, you shouldn't need the images, right? Still, some readers prefer having the character list. Idunno. I find it creepy... Without permission.
    January 9th, 2010 at 01:07am
  • I don't bother, except in banners, I prefer to let people make their own images up in their imagination.

I would have thought it should be copyrighted, I guess not. =/
I don't know whether I would be flattered or annoyed if some one used a pic of me. XD
    January 9th, 2010 at 01:04am
  • No..
but having them in the summary page and have character list in the summary page breaks Mibba rules.
They have to be in the actual page made just for the characters...
    I don't think it's weird, but that's just me...
I mean, if they see that I'm using their picture, and they don't want me to, then of course I'll take it down, but other than that, it's out there on the internet, ya know?
