What is it like in America? - Comments

  • I live in Pennsylvania, in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. It's mostly a lot of houses and shopping centers with things like Target, movie theaters, and other stores.

Everyone's pretty different. Some people will spend all day on the internet and watching TV, while others participate in countless sports and activities. Here, you can start working when you're 14, but most places won't hire you until you're 16. High school goes until you're 18. A lot of people pick up part-time jobs when they're in high school. In my area, most people either go to a four year college or to a two year community college upon graduating. Some people go straight into the workforce, but this is less common. In cities, college attendance rates are much lower.

We are not all fat. Many people, including myself, eat fast food often. But I also know tons of people who refuse to eat fast food at all. I'm not overweight, and when I walk around on a typical day, the majority of the people I pass are not overweight. Generally cities have more of an obesity problem, and certain parts of the country have more obesity than others.

In Pennsylvania we all speak English, but there are tons of bilingual people. There are lots of Spanish-speakers and many Asians. Since I live in the suburbs, I don't live in the most diverse place in the world, but our country as a whole is very diverse. Drive into the city and it is far more multicultural.

As a whole, I guess America is much more conservative than many other countries in the world, politically. We are especially sensitive about communism and socialism. Many people interchange the two words. We are very big on capitalism, democracy, and free markets. Many European countries are socialist and/or find socialism very acceptable; you won't encounter the same attitude in America. We also have a drinking age of 21, which in my eyes is a good thing, but I know it is different from many other countries. Still, there is definitely a strong mix of liberals and conservatives among us. And just because we're more right-wing doesn't mean we're racist though. Sure, every now and then there are racist people, but it's certainly not the norm. Most people look down upon any kind of prejudice, be it sexism, racism, homophobia, religious prejudice, etc. I know and am friends with plenty of people who aren't white. I also have gay friends, tons of Jewish friends, etc. I personally don't have any close friends who practice Islam, but I have Muslim acquaintances. Admittedly prejudice against Muslims and Arabs has increased in the last few years, but this is still not at all the norm.

  • I know I'm answering very late, so you might not see this.

Anyway, I live in a small town in Connecticut. My state is bordered by New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. The town I live in is the best of both, I suppose. Downtown is pretty much like a city center; there are small shops, with cobblestone sidewalks, fancy clocks, and old style chuches. Where I live, there are both domestic houses and small farms, side-by-side. There's not "much to do" like in New York or Boston, but we've some pretty cool stuff, if you really look for it.

We actually speak a cool little thing called Spanglish around here. Which is just Spanish and English. Most people are bilingual and those are the two most common languages.

I'd say the best place to go is Chicago, Illinois. I love it there and plan to go there when I go to college.

  • Wal mart basicly is a giant store all over America that has anything and everything you could ever need!! For the most part things are a little cheaper, but some things are equal or more expensive. They carry everything food, clothes, shoes, electronics, toys, cosmetics, houseware, school supplies, plants, car repair, and outdoor tools.

  • "What do people from Mexico speak?"
    "Spanish."
"What do people from New Mexico speak?"
    "...New Spanish?"
    "No. ENGLISH."

I've studied the map of America so I knew that New Mexico was part of it. :)

New question: If I was to move there in my twenty's, where would the best place I would go (in America)?

  • Tracey Sullivan None taken. I guess the Americans hating Canadians is kind of like us hating Australians? And also, I think everyone hates North Korea.

  • I live in Espanola, New Mexico. I really dislike saying where I live because people always think I live in Mexico and it annoys me. I don't, I live in the U.S but no one seems to know New Mexico is part of the U.S. That depresses me and sickens me at the same time this state is so often forgotten.
It usually gets hot here in the summer and it's always sunny. We rarely get rain or snow, but we usually get a lot of it around December and January. For instance, it's snowing right now. And after this month, we probably won't see it until next December. Espanola is a relatively small city, it's by no means as large as some surroundings cities but it's not as small as other towns. It's medium sized I guess. There are a lot of local businesses here, but there are some chain restaurants. Like Wal-Mart, Wendys, Lows, etc.. It's really crime ridden though, one of the worst cities around here. I live in the safest neighborhood though.

I really don't know how to describe this place.

All of America is different though, this is just one small city in America.

  • Well i live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Home of a lot of historical sites. Home to betsy Ross who stiched our nations first flag, Benjamin Franklin one of the worlds greatest inventors ( elctricity, home insurance, etc.) we have the Liberty Bell. Id say America has a pretty bad rep, thanks to outsiders who learn things from other people ( no offense) but to truly know america youd have to live here, its absolutly beautiful here, freedom, many stores Hot Topic, Wal-mart, Target, a hella lot of sports. And America does not like North Korea. Lol. Uh we have a great Army, navy etc. But of course people in other countries would only know about the bad things, it kinda makes us mad sometimes. But living in america you feel like your being judged on everything by other countries like weight and stuff, who does that?! haha oh and a lot dont like Canadians.

  • I live in Tennessee, but I've lived all over. I also lived in Germany, so I saw America with new eyes when I was 9. It is a rather free country. People are not as afraid to let them know what's on their mind as much. Good or bad thing? It's both. It's a rather gossipy country too. We like drama here. A lot. A little more than we should. But we have big hearted people too, people that wanna change the world and have big dreams. America to me is the dreams and nightmares of all countries put together.

  • HippieDays agreed.

alone; together Something like that. It sometimes is cheaper and sometimes it isn't.

  • Wal-Mart is the most annoying store in the history of stores!! The aisles are tiny and everyone walks incredibly slow and is in your way!! Well that's what all the Wal-Marts I've been to are like. You're so lucky you don't have that store where you live!!! =P

  • Well, I live in Texas..... Alot of people expect Texas to be all country, and dusty, and everyone rides around on horses with cowboy hats and wrangling the cows, in all reality there are farms, but it dpends if you live in a rural town like Burleson, Crowley, or Nacogdoches. But if you live in a bigger city such as Dallas, Houston, Fort Worth, or El Paso, its just like any other city. It has its good and bad sides. There are malls, neighborhoods, giant buildings, wal-marts, targets, and soooo much more :D.

Any questions? just PM me :D

  • Uhm, Walmart is the answer to life.

    Just saying.
    January 20th, 2010 at 03:05am
  • Well, I live in Houston, Texas and it's actually one of the cheapest places to live in the U.S. Whatever you've heard about Texas most likely isn't true. Yeah, we say y'all but that's about it.

Um, I really don't know how to describe it. There are department stores and neighborhoods where kids play in the street. We have homecoming and stuff like that. Basically what you see in the movies.
Not all Americans are overweight. I believe many are way too skinny.

    I hope that helped :)

  • I live in Cleveland, Ohio. Our economy sucks, we see the sun three times a year, and when it's not unbearably cold it's way too hot and humid.

    ...I mean. Go America!
