Knowledge brings ignorance - Comments

  • What you're talking about is paradigm shifts. Knowledge doesn't create ignorance any more than a wetland creates water. The water, and the ignorance, exists anyway. Something about the landscape just gives it temporary and measurable form.

Ignorance is a state of mind independent of knowledge and has existed in equal quantities at every stage of history. In its simplest definition, ignorance is simply a subjective measure of any perspective which hasn't expanded as far as yours, or, if paradigms may be thought of tools for survival rather than steps taken towards absolute truth, of a perspective which you feel is problematic in context.

Because it is a relative thing, ignorance doesn't really come from anywhere. However, there is a clear process by which the subjective notion of ignorance is asserted. Put plainly, some people adapt to change more quickly in their informational environments, while others, when confronted with the possibly of a wrenching need for a total perspective overhaul, naturally prioritise preserving the integrity of their viewpoint over the grueling process of admitting conflicting information into their universe, sometimes even to the point of rejecting fact and setting themselves up for conflict in their daily lives. This is the rationale behind willful blindness- the desire to hold onto a paradigm that works independent of outside change. And that is where ignorance comes from.

  • If only more people had a similar thought process.

I've always felt that there was something wrong with the world around me, I just could never put those thoughts into words. I applaud you for doing that so fluently.

  • I completely agree with this. Now that I think about it, knowledge and ignorance go hand in hand. If people like you called the shots, I highly doubt ignorance would be the pandemic it is today.
