I really don't know anything about publishing or which way the already-famous writers went to get there, but if I were you, I'd try to go the professional route, because that sounds better.
But then again...J.K Rowling was low on money when she wrote Harry Potter so she probably couldn't have gotten that, but look how famous she is now *Shrug*
