The Comment Swap - Comments

  • I agree with you on this. I've only read Original Fics on the comment swap, but I do worry a little about it being about something I'm uncomfortable with; I keep my rating at PG-13 and lower to be safe. If there was a way to make an option to avoid things like that, it'd be great.

However, we have to work with what we have right now and do the best we can as members to be fair to other writers in reading and commenting the stories we've been given.

I hope you get another chance to use the comment swap. I don't know how Dujo and the mods will work everything out, but I'm sure it'll be fine.

  • @invisible secrecy.

Thank you! I understand that I was partially at fault, but I really didn't know people wrote stories about incest and abortion. I just hate that I won't be allowed to use comment swap anymore because of my ignorance.

  • Of course people who write those sorts of story wouldn't mind to read anything like that but it's people like us who feel the unwillingness. I'm with you in this one.

  • I understand where you're comming from, of course, but at the end of the day it's up to each user to make sure they understand what the ratings are and what they include or to leave proper comments on the stories they receive through swap.

We're considering allowing people to skip a story or two, but it would be unreasonable to let people continuesely hit a skip button until they get exactly what they want, since that would defeat the point of the swap system and those with lesser known fandoms/unpopular content would still be overlooked.

I'm glad some people agree with me. I do see where I was wrong and wish I had taken precautions before I began using the comment swap, but I also think it would be nice to have a refresh option or something so you could get a new story - that would be a very simple fix.

I completely understand what you're saying and I should have paid more attention to those things. I didn't really think about what all the NC-17 would entail. I don't mean to sound ignorant when I say that I don't want to read those things, but some of them really do make me feel uncomfortable.
I also agree that it will be difficult, if not impossible, to filter those things out since there aren't tags for them or anything. I guess if people do end up getting the rights to comment swap back, I'll have to read the lesser rated stories.

  • It would include explicit incest and explicit descriptions of abortions. Not just the mentions of an abortion or incest, but I don't think that's something you can ever choose to not be in touch with, if it's just mentioned etc.
    June 12th, 2012 at 07:15am
  • This is just a thought but you can normally tell from the name of some stories what they will be about if you get the name of a story and you think you might not like it could you prehaps refresh the page and get a difrant story or would that not work?

And I kind of have to agree with Lilly but my veiws on this don't just go for this website, if I find a story that has something I don't believe in, in it I will not finish the book, like theirs a book called FunHouse, its a great story all the way through till the woman decides to have an abortion for absolutly no reason I actually threw the book in the trash..

So I see where Lilly is coming from, I love the comment swap feature but it really shouldn't be ready until its a better filter if there is to be a better filter that is, so people aren't forced to read things they didn't want to read..

Lisbeth makes a good point sort of you could focus on other parts of the story but some stories that is hard to do if its a heavy filled story of something you dislike but when it comes to slash my best advice for you would be do what I usally do, make one of them a girl and give it the best girl name you can...

If that doesn't help then theres always the old fashioned way of posting about it in the blogs

  • I went and looked at the rating page and it does say that it includes rape, but I didn't think it would include abortion and incest, too.
    June 12th, 2012 at 07:10am
  • @Lisbeth Salander.

I'm not against trying anything new. I just don't want to read anything way out of my comfort zone. For example, I am in no way comfortable with reading a story about rape. Reading a new band story doesn't bother me, it's the stories that are about incest, rape, abortion, satanists, etc. I know that the stuff is out there, but I don't feel comfortable reading them, and I don't think I should be forced to.

    @Bella is Snow White

I didn't know that the ratings included incest and rape. I thought it only meant swearing and sexual situations. I didn't even think people would write about those things before. Now I don't have the choice of leaving those out because I got banned.

The NC-17 rating says "Explicit sex scenes and excessively gory violence allowed, as well as everything above. Not intended for minors."
    June 12th, 2012 at 07:09am
  • The rating is always there for a reason. Swearing, incest, explicit sex, etc. If you're not comfortable with any of those, choose a story of a lower rating.
    June 12th, 2012 at 07:01am
  • But why not focus on other aspects of the story? So what if you don't like the topic of the story. Leave a comment about the language. If you saw any grammar/punctuation mistakes. What you liked about the story.

And why not give something a try? I, for one, have found stories that I never even dreamed I would have liked on here. I found a fanfic today from a fandom that I'm not even interested in, and I found out that I adored it.

Try giving something new a shot.

  • @Lisbeth Salander.
I get the point you are trying to make, but stories about rape and incest are very controversial, whether they are good or not, and a lot of people are uncomfortable with these topics.
    June 12th, 2012 at 06:57am
  • Before comment swap I didn't realize there were so many stories like that. NC-17 or R doesn't automatically mean slash or incest, and I didn't expect it to.

My point is: you shouldn't have to read stories that make your skin crawl. People put warnings in their summaries so people know ahead of time what they are getting into, and have the option to opt out of reading if the story makes them feel uncomfortable.

Whether or not it is the intention, I feel like Mibba is forcing people to read stories that make them feel uncomfortable to use the feature, and that is wrong.
    June 12th, 2012 at 06:55am
  • To tell you the truth, I don't think it's really fair to judge how a story will turn out just by it being slash or incest. You never know, you might like the writing style or the author's language. I don't think it's fair to judge a story just by it not being what is in your comfort zone.
    June 12th, 2012 at 06:54am
  • But if you had chosen a lower rating, maybe you would have been able to avoid those stories. Like, I used that feature a few times and never got anything I was interested in reading, I got stories about fandoms I don't care about and stories that made my skin crawl because of the content - I still read and commented. It's not that hard to give a genuine comment of only 200 characters without having to read a story ten times or print every single word into your mind.
    June 12th, 2012 at 06:50am
  • It's also not fair to the people who were banned because they were being forced to comment on stories that made them uncomfortable in order to use the feature.
