Nothing wrong w/ fanfics. I agree with what you said, a person is free to write it, but should not get any money profit from it because it is not their original story. If I ever published I think it would be interesting to see what people do to it, I'd like to see where they would have taken the story and how. Though, no offense, I would not like it if they made my characters homosexual in anyway because these characters of mine are personal and have their own lives and it wouldn't make me happy to see them... fondling and stuff. You might or might not understand.

Parodies that are published as books and/or made into movies are often published with the consent of the original creator(s) of the works. So many of the parodies that get published into the "real world" aren't copyright infringement since they have permission from the copyright holder(s). Copyright infringement entails the work was taken/altered/claimed without consent of the holders of the rights to that series. Thus it would be illegal if they didn't have permission but in most (if not all) cases, published parodies have gotten permission from the creator(s).

Fanfiction can at times be illegal because it can cross into copyright infringement, but it's very rare for that to happen. Like you mentioned, some authors don't wish for fanfics to be made of their work and as the holders of the rights to that series, they have every right and ability to ban people from writing fanfics of their works. If Anne Rice wanted to, she could legally prosecute anyone writing a fanfic of her work but she chooses not to waste the money prosecuting every individual and goes through writing sites to ensure fanfics of her work is taken down as soon as possible. It would be far too costly to prosecute individuals. Most authors, however, don't care if someone is writing a fanfic of their work and don't see it as infringement, so most fanfiction isn't illegal because we have indirect permission from the creators. Creators won't prosecute people because it's just too costly to prosecute everyone who does write fanfictions of works that creators have banned. It's just not possible to do such.

Most fanfiction is go because, as mentioned, most authors just don't care or don't mind that people write fanfics.

Uh... no, because fanfiction can be, and is, published. Although some authors put them up for free on their own created website, or set them for free on things such as the Kindle or Nook, they're still published.

Also, parodies (might've spelled that wrong) - are they not a form of fanfiction in any way?
