Yes, you should be working on applications now. You want to have most of them submitted by December, and you'll also want to file your Fafsa in december.

Not all universities require recommendation letters, in fact most state universities don't- they just look at your SAT/ACT score and GPA. If you're not very involved in school or extracurricular activities, you may have difficulty getting into private, selective schools who really value that type of thing. But, there is nothing wrong with state universities, so don't let that discourage you.

If you need a recommendation letter, you can ask your counselor or any teacher to write one for you. They'll just say generic nice things about how you're a good student.

Hi, I'm a college student myself and I had to get recommendations too. I had the same problem, I didn't really participate in class and was pretty quiet, but the teachers that you have know who you are. Honestly if you can choose a teacher that you did excellent in that class in, they have more to write about, how great you are in class or how focus, etc. If there is anyone that works at the school you can ask them to write one for you, I asked my counselor for one and two of my teachers that I absolutely enjoyed having class with. They wrote great recommendations for me and do you have to do a senior project because if so, then you can ask your mentor to write one for you. You should definitely start when you go back to school, I have learned that when you put things off you are rushing later. You will be surprised how fast your senior year flies by, trust me. I know it can be awkward and just plain weird to ask for recommendations but remember you aren't the only one and it isn't an out of the blue question. Teachers and faculty members are expecting their seniors to ask for one, so go for it. It's time to break that habit and do something out of the ordinary :) If you have any questions application wise, you can always ask me. Not only have I have gone through the process twice (because I transferred during my second year to another college) but my mother reads applications since she works at USC. Don't be afraid to ask :)

If you don't participate in class, start not. You can get a good recommendation around christmas time if you make a go impression between now and then. Just walk up and say "I was wondering if I could get a recommendation from your for college?"
