(I mean this to read as a continuation of an intellectual conversation about fanfics, research, and realistic characters.)
As a fan of both My Chem and comics (my favorite being The Umbrella Academy, and not just because it's written by Gee), I did know that! And I am one of those who do research before and while writing my fanfics. There are some things in certain stories I take creative liberties with, though; that's just part of writing fiction. I'm also of the opinion that, with some genres such as bandfics, the characters don't always have to be the written replica of the real life person they are based on. Sometimes I use the image of Gerard, Frank, Mikey, or Ray as the face of an OMC.
My favorite fanfic-turned-published-writer says it better than I can:
But even with that said, there are still limits to how far you can take creative liberties. Anyone who knows anything about Batman knows he's not the cute, cuddly, and snuggly type; never has been, never will be. Batman has come pretty close to being an antihero a few times. There are some limits and boundaries that, even in fanfictions, can't be crossed without losing credibility and a realistic feel.
- Evelyn Deshane, aka familyofstars:
- I’m convinced that when people write fan fiction using them, they are not actually talking about the band members – it’s just the personality that this person represents and their physical features. It’s the “essence” or something behind the personality that we’re all trying to discuss or read about.
And on a different note... I'm looking very forward to Grant's new comic coming out at the end of this month, Happy. It's looks awesome from seen about it and heard Grant say while promoting it! My husband, also a huge comic fan (of the more mainstream comics) laughed when I told him about it; he said Grant had finally lost it, writing a comic about a broken down cop turned unsucessful hitman that has a tiny, blue feathered horse. He joked that Grant had been spending WAY too much time with Gerard! But for me, that's not a bad thing at all!
How is the Umbrella Academy your favorite comic of all time? It was good but it wasn't nearly as good as
The Invisibles
Watchmen
V for Vendetta
All Star Superman
Stitches
The Killing Joke
The New 52 Action Comics run by grant Morrison
Morrisons run on Batman
Etc...
Not trying to be rude but it really didn't measure up in comparison.
But happy looks amazing. Even if it means he isn't gong to be writing Superhero comics anymore. What's your favorite current comic runs?
