I totally agree with you. I love this blog so much right now.
I'm scared to tell friends and family that I write fanfiction because I'm scared their minds will instantly go to sex and the like. When that's not what I write. And even if I try and explain it to them, they'll still have that thought in their mind that I'm just writing sex scenes all the time. Which, again, I don't. It's difficult for me to come up with an original idea sometimes, so I write fan fiction. But sex isn't all there is. There are some really good, original fanfics out there that have no sex in them at all whatsoever.
I absolutely HATE people who say that fan fiction is stupid, because I'm a huge believer in everything that you've said here. I started writing fan fiction when I was eleven (before I had the Internet, and before I even knew there was such a thing as fan fiction) and it definitely put me on the path to wanting to become a better writer, and maybe someday be published.
But I never considered it as being a way to explore your sexuality. I won't lie, for a long time I looked at a lot of stories and was disgusted by the fact that people seemed to put sex scenes in there just for the sake of having a sex scene. It horrified me, because it never seemed to be relevant to the story - it was just people trying to be more popular. And then came along smut.
It's only recently that I've really been able to look at these things more seriously. With 50 Shades Of Grey dominating the market, smut is just going to pop up more and more. And I suppose, as a girl, if you want to explore your sexuality, it's a whole lot better than getting caught searching for porn.
Um, I ranted and lost my train of thought just now. I apologise. But my main point is that this blog post is completely relevant, and I hope more people read it.
And thank you for the link to that article - it made for a very interesting read! Although, I didn't like this line: "For those who still read proper books, fan fiction – particularly its romance-heavy strand slash fiction – is a self-publishing phenomenon where amateur authors and tween pop superfans write sexy stories about the celebrities they are obsessed with."
Not all fan fiction is "sexy", and I wish more people knew that. Regardless, amazing blog. =)
