How I feel about fan fiction. - Comments

  • I read, so I can't leave without commenting.

I absolutely HATE people who say that fan fiction is stupid, because I'm a huge believer in everything that you've said here. I started writing fan fiction when I was eleven (before I had the Internet, and before I even knew there was such a thing as fan fiction) and it definitely put me on the path to wanting to become a better writer, and maybe someday be published.

But I never considered it as being a way to explore your sexuality. I won't lie, for a long time I looked at a lot of stories and was disgusted by the fact that people seemed to put sex scenes in there just for the sake of having a sex scene. It horrified me, because it never seemed to be relevant to the story - it was just people trying to be more popular. And then came along smut.

It's only recently that I've really been able to look at these things more seriously. With 50 Shades Of Grey dominating the market, smut is just going to pop up more and more. And I suppose, as a girl, if you want to explore your sexuality, it's a whole lot better than getting caught searching for porn.

Um, I ranted and lost my train of thought just now. I apologise. But my main point is that this blog post is completely relevant, and I hope more people read it.

And thank you for the link to that article - it made for a very interesting read! Although, I didn't like this line: "For those who still read proper books, fan fiction – particularly its romance-heavy strand slash fiction – is a self-publishing phenomenon where amateur authors and tween pop superfans write sexy stories about the celebrities they are obsessed with."

Not all fan fiction is "sexy", and I wish more people knew that. Regardless, amazing blog. =)

  • I totally agree with you. I love this blog so much right now.

I'm scared to tell friends and family that I write fanfiction because I'm scared their minds will instantly go to sex and the like. When that's not what I write. And even if I try and explain it to them, they'll still have that thought in their mind that I'm just writing sex scenes all the time. Which, again, I don't. It's difficult for me to come up with an original idea sometimes, so I write fan fiction. But sex isn't all there is. There are some really good, original fanfics out there that have no sex in them at all whatsoever.

  • Wow, I just love this blog so very much.

Usually when I read something about 'FanFiction' it's normally negative or the person is talking about how cliche it is, and boring and blah blah blah. No one stops and thinks about how useful fanfiction can be. So, reading something like this makes me smile. :)

  • This. Just on so many levels, this.

A lot of people claim they don't care for fanfiction, but it is a staple on not only online teen literature, but just literature. And just like those who write regular original fiction, it should be respected. More than what it gets now.

  • I'll have to look up the show lol x]

I started out writing fanfic when I was little, like I said, and they all would be about high school or someone living on the same street as all these famous people lol.

And then, I think it was around the end of elementary school, I wrote this big Bratz and Harry Potter fanfic and I was in love with it.

And then on Quizilla I tried doing some Tokio Hotel fanfic but it didn't work out, and then when I came over here to Mibba that's when my love for reading/writing it really grew lol.

And I totally agree with what isadora said.

  • I remember all of my fanfics about Oli Sykes. Only two were worth keeping and I'm still proud of them to this day. When you love someone famous I don't see any shame in writing about them. I mean, I don't write anything vulgar, it's not my style, but if someone else does and enjoys it then good for them. Let them improve! I think the last fanfic I ever wrote was Liv, with Harry Styles in it, and it had absolutely nothing to do with One Direction or music or anything. I just thought he was freakin' cute!

  • @katze, most it makes me cringe, too. I just think the concept of it is important. :P

  • @ladyschrei It was this Scottish show called Monarch of the Glen. c:

I think I've been writing fanfic for years as well without really thinking about it, haha.

Do you remember what show? That's actually cool he did that :)

I remember, before I wanted to be a serious writer and knew what fanfiction was, I used to write it. A lot. My sister did too, though she doesn't write anymore. We were really young then and had no idea what the heck it was. That was kind of like, fanfiction, I don't think, was as big as it is now when we did it. Lol.

I still love to read and write fanfiction though, and always plan to.

My mom even reads fanfiction off Wattpad.

  • @ladyschrei My grandfather who died a few years wrote fan fiction in his 80's for this show he used to watch. It's not even exclusive to young people. :P

  • You have an Archive account? I just got mine not too long ago, I was on the waiting list for a couple months :3 I love that site, I read all my Loki/Iron Man stories on there. LOL.

    Not the point.

"I really hate it when people blindly criticize those who write fan fiction. It is an important outlet for young people to explore and develop themselves on. All the cliche story lines and the corny dialogue doesn't matter, because the hope is that one day, everyone will become better writers."

    ^^^ THIS. THIS SO MUCH.

OMG I love this blog, I really do.

It's funny you brought it up being from Tumblr, because I remember I reblogged before, possibly from one of Mibba's Tumblr accounts, I'm not sure, it was a text post done by an English teacher. Someone had asked her her thoughts on fanfiction, and she said some of the things you did, and went on to say how even in old times, fanfictions were written, though not called that. Like, people a loooong time ago wrote fanfictions about Gods and God himself and tales they were told of others, twisting them around to be their own.

    It's all fanfiction.

    I rambled :3
