Books I want to read in 2013. - Comments

    Sure. I can't stop you. ;)

I just feel like Augustus was a bit too...I don't know. He just sounded older than he was and talked in a way that was, excuse the cliche, a bit "hiperish" and slightly pretentious but not meaning to.. Both of the MCs just talked like how I picture older people to talk talking.

Augustus particularly talked in a way that showed he was wise beyond his years...As did Hazel at times. I understand cancer can matures people but the over-analyzing talk just turned me off. The dialogue just seemed too unnatural for teenagers. They seemed too clever and profound and yes, I know teenagers can be clever and profound but it was just overdone in my opinion. It seemed contrived.

This piece of dialogue just bothered me because I can't picture anyone saying it.

    To put it in context:

"Are you serious?" I asked. "You think that's cool? Oh, my God, you just ruined the whole thing."
"Which whole thing?" he asked, turning to me. The cigarette dangled unlit from the unsmiling corner of his mouth.

    This paragraph
"The whole thing where a boy who is not unattractive or unintelligent or seemingly in any way unacceptable stares at me and points out incorrect uses of literality and compares me to actresses and asks me to watch a movie at his house. But of course there is always a hamartia and yours is that oh, my God, even though you HAD FREAKING CANCER you give money to a company in exchange for the chance to acquire YET MORE CANCER. Oh, my God. Let me just assure you that not being able to breathe? SUCKS. Totally disappointing. Totally."

I also just don't like Augustus from what I've read. His dialogue is annoying for me.

The first one is 'Peeps'/'Parasite Positive' and the other is 'The Last Days'. I just finished re-reading them the other day and forgot how good they were :D

  • Uglies is a really good series, though I never read the fourth one. :)
    little motorkitty;:
I've read all the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld and if you like them you should read his Peeps books, they're about vampires but soooo much better than you think.
I honestly never heard of those, I'm about to look them up now though :D

  • Girl, Interrupted and The Fault in Our Stars are such brilliant choices! :)

  • I've read both The Fault in Our Stars and Uglies, and they're both really good.

    @ DarkestStorm
Can I ask why you didn't think the characters in The Fault in Our Stars were realistic?

  • I'm in the middle of reading The Fault In Our Stars. At least I was...before I had to stop because the main characters felt a little too...unrealistic (I know, I know...).

My mom read the Uglies series, she loved it. I'm going to eventually get around to reading it too. I have them all on my nook.

I read a sample of "Why We Broke Up" on my Nook. I wasn't too impressed with what I read but I'll probably give it another try eventually.

I loved the film adaption of Girl, Interrupted. I need to get around to reading it too.

  • That's what I thought about Casual Vacany, too, but it's just pointless sex. never ending, and that's the entire story.
