@vladikavkaz that is completely true. There really isn't a need to learn about other countries here generally, unless you plan to travel or live abroad. It's kind of sad actually, but it's the truth.

also, just bless these comments! i thought i was going to get a lot of hate for this, honestly.

Of course, America is mostly no worse than any other country. Everyone notices it because it is one of the most important countries in the world - seriously, I and a lot of other 'foreigners' appear to know more about the country than some Americans (that's not a stab at Americans, just an emphasis on it's importance). If so many people do not even know which continent my country is on, how are they supposed to know the negatives of the country? Being in the spotlight has to have downsides too.

I think another problem is that America is often presented as a country which is very developed. Whilst this may be true in an economic sense, people don't realise that racism/sexism/xenophobia etc. still exist there, so they are shocked to find out. It honestly shocked me. The whole 'American dream' still exists in a way and it's pretty disconcerting to know that even in one of the most economic and socially developed countries in the world, you can still face the same prejudice and discrimination.

The only problem I've had with individual Americans is ignorance in the area of the rest of the world. I think Americans don't really 'need' to know much about the outside world unless they plan on living abroad or having a career which involves traveling. It's not a huge issue with most people, but some of the things I hear leave me stunned.

Yesssssss! I'm so tired of seeing some ignorant YouTube comment, and having someone else reply to it saying, "Must be a fat American."

I agree so much. I think people use America as a dumping ground for all the hate that occurs in the world because they are too damn lazy themselves to recognize that the same thing happens EVERYWHERE. They are not wrong that Americans CAN be awful, but so can Europeans, Asians, Africans, Australians, etc. It's a human flaw, not an American one. I hate it when people conveniently ignore the atrocities their own people have committed in favor of criticizing America and pointing out everything bad we've ever done as if to say, "Hey, these people suck. Can you believe they even exist?"

People who buy into this directed-hate-towards-America-while-ignoring-ones-own-faults are ignorant, hateful, and simply uneducated whether it be by choice or not.

Yessss. I think what I hate the most is when one race that lives in the same country shits on the country. Okay for example I'm Brazilian. A lot of people I know that are also Brazilian stick together and whatnot. There are a lot of them that hate America even though they live here and all they do is insult Americans when really they are too. It's just stupid af.
