This. So much. I was looking for this specific girl I saw on tumblr once (and reblogged but its like lost somewhere in my blog) and I wehearted black girls and IT WAS LIKE TOTALLY DEAD. I was like come on weheartit come on, so I had to give up my search for that girl.

I really do hate how few POC protagonists I find in the stories on here. I mean, they can be written well and everything, but it is it too much to ask for to find a character that looks like me once in a while.

hahaha! Exactly. You really just have to trudge through all of it. Or what I've been doing lately is using this tumblr blog called Models Of Color, and if I run across a picture of a girl I like, I search her name and try to find other ones of her. I'm sure there are a multitude of these blogs, but idk. It's really helped me. Maybe you guys should give it a try?

I just hate playing into this whitewashed standard of beauty, and so I try and make sure that none of my protagonists are white. Not that I have a problem with it at all, but personally, I feel like girls of color should be more accurately represented in stories and movies and whatnot. Instead of waiting around for someone else to do it, I decide to chip in where I can. :P

Tell me about it. There's always mistagged pictures on weheartit, and all you can really find on there is pictures of white hipster girls. I was once trying to write a story with a native american girl, but obviously there were no accurate pictures online to aid me. There isn't very much variety.

I have the same exact problem whenever I search pictures for my characters. Weheartit is beginning to look real annoying to me in terms of search options.

I have this same grievance! I'm writing a new story and the character I had in mind was of African American descent, and it made me pretty angry that nothing but white girls showed up in the tag. It isn't right, at all.

Ugh, I agree with you 110%. It is literally so frustrating. In all the times I've searched on weheartit for a picture of a black girl, I have uncovered maybe three, four good ones. The other ones I have ever found have been weird blurry, not good quality things, and even those are a small amount. Being black myself, I can't help but feel a little personally annoyed

I've just settled for choosing models or actors who I know and appearances I preferred and searching them up instead of vaguely looking.

It is sad to see and I couldn't agree more! My favorite black female character on television right now would have to be Olivia Pope from Scandal! I love her and all her flaws, but anyway, on a different sub topic, believe it or not, majority of the banners I use with black girls in it, I've found on tumblr. You have to know where to look and who to follow because I see black women everywhere! So, dig a little deeper through tumblr that would be your best shot. And when my computer is up and running, I'll send you some links too!

I remember trying a long time ago to find a photo of a Pakistani/Indian girl for a story and I think only four pages came up and they were entirely irrelevant. Tumblr was of no help either. I searched for hours and came up empty handed. It was so frustrating.

Oh, god, I hate this so much. I'm Mexican, so when I look up for Latinas on images for whatever purposes I either get nothing but white girls or hypersexualized and pornographic images of Latina women.

I agree, with just about everything on Weheartit it doesn't matter what it is. I could search "food" and a picture of Niall Horan could show up or some attractive male model type. Like, no, I was talking about food that you eat, not what you wish you could "eat".

Not to mention I was looking for an image for one of my male characters so I typed in "brunette male" and what comes up? Blonde guys, blonde girls, brunette girls, clothing... I don't think that's relevant to my searches?

The tags system is messed up and it doesn't help that people can add tags of their own but not delete any of them. Sigh. So frustrating.

I've noticed this problem myself too. I mean, the majority of western culture is totally whitewashed. Next time you watch TV, see how many adverts contain a POC or even the tv show or film you'r watching, see how many main characters are people of colour. Or you google 'beautiful girl' and see how many WOC come up. It's saddening.
