When do opinions become harmful opinions? - Comments

  • @ semolina
    "Equal marriage is disgusting and ruining 'traditional' marriage."
    "Abortions are murder and people who get them should be ashamed."

    Neither of those two are really "insulting the shit" out of someone, but I would still consider them harmful.

  • A harmful opinion is one that infringes upon someone else's rights. Insulting the shit out of someone isn't really an opinion.

  • I don't know what's more disgusting to me: the fact that those statements were all said to you, the statements themselves, or the fact someone once called you an "ugly slut" for being a girl gamer.

    Because now that makes me an ugly slut Disgust Well then.

    In all seriousness though, I definitely agree with all of this. Especially that GIF. ;D

    I can get heated when it comes to arguments on Tumblr. I try not to let people get to me, but sometimes that doesn't happen. If something offends me I say it, sometimes rudely, but I try to stay calm and respectful and not call names, but sometimes it slips out. And by that I mean calling someone an idiot, etc. I try not to, I think I'm better at it now than I was before and can control myself when it comes to things like that, and re-word things before I hit Reblog. I've never told anyone they were a slut or to kill themselves or anything like that, though. I try to laugh it all off now, but sometimes people just... I can't with them.

    Like not too long ago on Tumblr, I was told I was a psycho and to die in a fire because I reblogged someone's rude statement about rape stories and I said it was okay to read/write rape stories, and people acted like it was World War III when I said doing that doesn't make you "crazy" or a "psycho" or "rapist" or anything like that.

    I was calm about it, though. And even though it hurt to be told something like that, I honestly just laughed at their ignorance, and told them I was doing so Wink

  • Thisssss.
    I enjoy debates but sometimes it astounds me how people word their opinion, which is why I keep on scrolling if it's on Tumblr. It isn't worth it to me.

  • @ little motorkitty;
    That's why I dislike the 'everyone has a right to express their opinion' argument, because no, that isn't true. Everyone has a right to be respected and treated with kindness, and if your opinion robs someone of that right, then you should keep your lips zipped.

    Yeah, pretty much what I was getting for. it's still your opinion but if it projects hate/shame towards people then it's harmful.

    Thanks! And yeah, sadly when you run a blog that posts feminist/positivity content then you kind of attract the people who want to drag you down. Thankfully I am well used to it by now and have my way of handling it Mr. Green

  • I think an opinion becomes more than an opinion, a harmful statement, when it's said with hate or anger, with intent to hurt or shame someone else in anyway.

  • Technically, you're being bullied online, but you handled it very well :D
