Birds are so fragile but absolutely lovely

You're not a bitch for saying that if I can't care for them I should find someone who can. I think I just needed to hear it for someone who is not my mom. The way the birds act has a lot to do with the way my dad treated them. He didn't take care of them well. They barely ever left their cages there. He was also agressive towards the amazon.

  • I'm an experienced bird owner. I've had several of many varieties since I was 7.

If the bird is biting you then you are doing something wrong. They will only bite if they are scared or if it is a learned behaviour. I have scars from my Eclectus. It took months but he now knows I don't appreciate being bitten, and I appreciate when he wants space. There are little things you can do that will cause them to bite. I can't wear nailpolish because my bird is scared of it. Some birds don't like you wearing the colour red.

If the birds are in the same cage then you should separate them if they are fighting. They might seriously hurt one another. Also, if they are biting then this may lead to infection or irritation.

If you can't provide these parrots with attention then they will get bored. You could try getting them safe toys that they can destroy (these are a favourite with my parrot). Try getting an old book from a second hand store or just one you have lying around. I usually cut them in half but it's not necessary if the cage has the room. Drill a hole through it and hang it in the cage for them to shred. You could also give them treats that they have to work for. My ekkie is probably a little smarter so uses a lot of foraging toys because he can learn to open them with his feet and seems satisfied doing that all day. You could look into something like that.

Rehoming birds that bite can be a hard job but if you're not willing to work it out then they probably deserve better. I know I sound like a bitch for that, but I'm currently in the middle of a very long process of re-taming my sisters cockatiel as she stopped paying him attention years ago and he's not quite recovered from that. It's just frustrating because all these birds have so much love to give.

Try anything once. Hopefully it works out for you :)

  • I'd say keep the birds and get a cat as well. That is, if you can get both the birds their own cage. They might be tired of having to share a cage with each other, which could be making them grouchy.

I have a parakeet, and my Mom had a Cockatiel, and the Parakeet would always be jumping on the Cockatiels back and stuff just for fun. The Cockatiel, however, didn't think it was fun :P lol. Anyways, we got the Parakeet it's own cage.

But if both birds are to angry and stuff to be able to pick either of them up and move them into a different cage, and there's really just nothing you can do about it, then I would suggest giving them away. Maybe someone else knows what to do about it, maybe they know of a way to make the birds happy..

I don't know. Whatever you decide to do though, I hope it works out :)

  • Well, I don't want this to sound upsetting, but maybe the birds are nervous and depressed too. They've been your pets for years and maybe they are turning crazy and need a new atmosphere and perspective. Someone out there will probably always be able to take care of them and love them, like an elder who doesn't have much to live for, but preferably one not that old so they don't die on the birds. I'd honestly get a cat. I have 14 :) 12 live outside though.

  • Hmmm, for starters I don't think it's wise to have the birds and the cat. I can see the cat go after the birds and vice versa. With the cat, I think that'd be a good option for you but also remember that cats are rather independent creatures and can be difficult to deal with sometimes. It really depends on the type of cat you get, but I think a cat's a good idea Cute Hope this helps :s
