Yes, the cliches are tricky. Because you can see: there's the cliché of Matt being a sadistic, gang leader, who will always interfere in the lives of other components, no matter what.

It is as if there were just enough for Matt to be a dominant killer and corrupt, he also has to be a troublemaker, an arrogant and cocky leader.

I note that the newest fashion a7x fanfic is one of the components (Brian and Matt, ooops, more cliches) betray his girlfriend who fought from the beginning to the band's success, and after a few (or many) years to redeem himself and build a new and happy life, lalala.

But anyway ... I run these stories cliches too. As a vampire king (Matt) behind his promised wife. Are boring.

And when they launch something new, it takes to be updated. This is so sad.

I read this almost expecting to wince throughout it because I am writing and organized crime story with Avenged Sevenfold and I was figuring this blog would make me second guess everything and I would hit a bunch of cliches with it... but I don't think I hit one. And I can thank knowing my subject matter and extensive research into organized crime families for that.

I made Brian the leader, or upcoming leader rather, of the crime family. He is the older brother of the main character, which is how and why she is involved in organized crime anyway. It's not something you just fall into, especially if someone holds any sort of power or sway in that organization. You have to be born into it, or have blood ties to it.

There is no set "second in command" but rather other branches that watch their own territory and have their own special skill set. Matt, in this story, is the highest enforcer and the more blood thirsty of the group. Zacky does more of the techy stuff and infiltrating. Jimmy is usually called in to "clean up", and Johnny does a lot of breaking and entering and keeps the local law enforcement in line with the organization.

There is no other man, at least not one that is living or from the band. There is a child involved, but it's a boy and he does not belong to a member of the band. He's also only 4.

The organization is NOT named Avenged Sevenfold, nor really anything for that matter, because most organized crime groups that we call "mob" or "Mafia" not only are not named, but they don't use the terms mob or mafia. They're usually referred to by the last name of the capo of the organization. Think of the Five Families, they're referred to as Lucchese Family, Bonanno Family, etc.

This comment wound up being longer than I originally intended... but my main point was that I think that a little research from sources other than another author's similar story could help most people avoid a lot of these cliches and plot traps. :)

The sky is blue due to the refraction of light through particles in the air, or something equally scientifically sounding...lol. As to this whole blog post, it's so true. Though I try to steer away from the cliche fics.

Oh! I finally remember a story where Matt was the main character but he had a son who actually had a bit of a handicapped. That story overall was totally original like....I'd never read an Avenged Fan Fic like it. I can't remember the name of it, though.

My father fic is different and I'm happy about that. :P
Brian is the father. He knew about his on all along but didn't want custody of him. The child was not a daughter. He's not a teenager and since he's really young, he's not a fan. :)

    It's called Chocolate Eyes

    :) I like not be a stereotype.

I laughed the whole way through this, because it's just so true. But there are of course exceptions.

I'm fairly certain I've read a gang fic where Brian was the leader, but don't ask me what it was - I only skimmed through it, and for the life of me I can't remember the title or the author. Gang fics usually don't interest me, so I didn't stick around.

Naming the gang Avenged Sevenfold does annoy me, though. If I see that in the summary, I often leave. Which sounds bad, but it's true.

Love fan fics, I was smiling the whole way through because I thought I'd avoided all your clichés with my story Crash Into Me. The love interest was Zacky; Brian wasn't the other guy; Jimmy wasn't always hyper.

But Matt was an older brother figure. Damn. =P

My new story avoids these though. Points to me?

Father fics, I adore. But you're absolutely right - they're always daughters, Matt is usually the father, he rarely knows he has a kid, and Zacky usually ends up dating them.

And they're always a fan of the band! Ugh!

But again, I smiled through this. My story Lost is a father/child fic. Zacky was the father. The story is about his relationship with his SON (but yeah, he didn't know about the kid - missed full points again!) The kid was NOT a fan of the band, and he most certainly did not date any of the guys. =P

Not trying to toot my own horn. I don't expect reads from this. I just wanted to show that exceptions do exist, and I pride myself on being one of them. If I get an idea, I refuse to write it until I make sure it isn't cliché and over-done. I hope to see more originally in the future.

I could also tell you why the sky is blue, but I think I've wasted enough of your time. ;)
