story trends i don't understand? - Comments

right?! like, that just doesn't happen in real life. Like, even in au, they're not even famous! like why would you let them follow you around? Who in their right mind told you that was a good idea?! Like in Dark her mom is pushing her into a relationship with her stalker like what? and even if they were famous, it still wouldnt be an okay thing!

I haven't read that, but YES! Especially when they begin to follow them everywhere afterward. Like really? Okay, I understand these boys are beyond beautiful looking - especially when it's an au and they're beautifully punk- but beautiful enough to look passed the fact they're stalking? I really don't think so.

Like, for example, not saying this is a bad thing, but in Dark, that fanfic everyone was so excited about for the longest, Harry just does that exact same thing that you typed up except they were at a party and it was very quick. Then, he stalked her! But yeah, pretty much what you typed in the blog.

Yeah, it definitely depends on how it happens. Like I definitely do enjoy the whole protective thing, it's mainly when like, before the characters even speak to each other, that's the first thing they say ever, you know? But I definitely see what you mean!

  • I actually enjoy the second type but some of them happen way too fast and I sometimes get that type image of the dog and a tree sorta, not the same thing but something along the lines... cx like sometimes when that happens, i don't imagine them as like this badass with tattoos and piercings but instead i see a little kid whining that it was theirs first... ya know what I mean?

Now see, if someone wrote an arranged marriage story that was set in a culture or a time period when that was normal, okay I might read that if the story were interesting and well written. But...in modern times...to a band member? It's just a little too fictional for me to handle. And I can be guilty at times myself of making my lead characters be pretty damn awesome, but I try to even it out by giving them trust issues, temper problems, inability to control sarcasm, etc. Something that makes them if not totally relatable for everyone, at least more believable than some characters and not flawless. I get tired of the slutty cheerleaders too. Can't there ever be a nice cheerleader? Or at least one who isn't blond? Can't there be more than one flawless girl in the entire universe? I'm all for having a royal b*tch in a story if it calls for one, but let's shake it up a little, people.

I think we all are guilty when it comes to making our main characters have a good amount of great qualities, but it depends on how it all weighs out, if that makes sense? Nobody's perfect and I find it hard to believe a gorgeous girl who's funny, smart and talented would be the subject of everybody's bully. Granted, it could happen I suppose, but still. AND THERE IS NO WAY THAT THE MAIN GIRL IS THE ONLY LEVEL-HEADED, DOWN TO EARTH GIRL. And the stereotypical, blonde cheerleader-bimbo-slut named Stacey or Brittany bother me too. Facepalm I can understand an arranged marriage story... but to a celebrity? No, not likely. Being famous isn't in the circle of careers/people who do get arranged marriages.

Same for me too! I mean, I'm definitely not the best writer out there - I've been guilty of everything that annoys me now in the past - but it's so hard to find something that doesn't have a constant fatal flaw that keeps me from reading the story.

Oh my god, I know! I admit, I tend to make my female characters tough and smart, and my male characters are usually pretty charming, but I give them a nice dose of imperfection. I also try to avoid making my female leads the cliche of dyed black hair, loves MCR, and is the only girl in her school who isn't a blond bimbo, OMG!!! I despise that. It's completely unrealistic, and, let's face it, even when writing fiction you still need an air of reality as well as relatable characters. The "holy crap, I have an arranged marriage to *insert famous guy's name here*" stories get on my nerves too. I mean, really? In what freaking universe? lmfao And then to top it all off, these kinds of stories are so prevalent! I mean, geez, they're all over Mibba and other writing sites. It's getting harder and harder for me to find the types of stories I actually like to read. Grr

I think that must be it, that they were just written poorly, because I've read one or two books where a group of people get kidnapped and at least one wants to stay/has developed feelings for the kidnapper and I was actually able to enjoy those books.

    @ She Said Poptarts
PUNK LIAM WOULD BE A BEAUTIFUL THING WOULDN'T IT? like he's normally all cute and cuddly looking - especially in a lot of liam fics - but punk liam would surely make the best punk au out of one direction

but my urges to write a punk liam one shot or story are growing stronger let me just tell you

    @ starlight.
I agree. I guess it's just one of those fetishes people have that, since I don't, I obviously won't understand, but I can't even read BDSM stories. The whole concept of that just turns me off at least twenty times.

Exactly! I can relate to having celebrity crushes and wanting to write about them but I think they forget that - unless you give it a supernatural feel of love potions or soulmates or something - celebrities in love work the same way that we do. I just can't read them.
Those stories also turn me off from the beginning because of their perfect, flawless main character.

  • The kidnapping thing I could get if the author was going for a psychological thing and the victim is going through Stockholm Syndrome or something; like her mind was making her think she was in love with her kidnapper to ease the trauma of the situation. Even still, I probably wouldn't want to read it as I prefer tough heroines who kick the crap out of people who abuse them. But considering that most of the stories of this nature that you find on Mibba are in fact supposed to be erotic and the victim sees the goodness in her captor or whatever, I avoid these altogether because...no. Rape and torture is not sexy in my mind, period. I don;t even like reading BDSM stories and those are at least two people consenting to do weird s*** to each other.

As for the second trend you mentioned: gag me. I think people write such things because they love these celebrities (which I have no problem with; I have a few celeb crushes myself) and want to, I don't know, live out a fantasy via writing? Which I grant you is understandable but...I just can't get into stories like that.

  • v I agree with her. Write a punk au fic of Liam. omg.
    November 10th, 2013 at 11:58am
  • I understand what you mean about some of that. I really dislike it when there's no buildup between the characters or if it's completely unrealistic. because let's be serious - the bad boys never just turn good for the good girls. It just does not happen irl and it certainly doesn't take 2 seconds of sexy time eye contact, although ...

He was finally in front of me and he had me pressed up against the lockers, his lips at my ear. "You're mine," he whispered seductively.
just do everyone a favor here and write that punk au liam fic.
seriously, just do it for the sake of everyone
bc punk liam turns me on
    i'll just leave now

  • The first one can be related to Stockholm syndrome or hybristophilia in some cases. But it can be done very poorly and sloppily without exploring the psychological causes, which is probably the type of story that bothers you. I enjoy a good kidnapping story but they're very difficult to write properly.

  • YES EXACTLY hahahahahahaah that drives me insane in stories and in real life like gurl slow down learn yo facts stalk him on fb get to know him idk
i prefer a story that's realistic and idk how relationships and that go for others but for me i prefer to read one that takes time and builds up rather it being they meet next chapter in love next chapter break up idk too much too quickly i can't process the information that quickly XD

  • Amateur romance. *disgusted*

  • @ swell
right? like, okay, i understand that it's fiction writing and that you can do whatever since you're basically playing god to your characters, but i really can't get into stories that move that quick.
like you're confessing your undying love to this man and you don't even know his last name? lmfao
    November 10th, 2013 at 05:13am
  • agreed
the second one pisses me off if i'm being perfectly honest
    drives me insane
stories in general that have characters fall in love within the first five chapters drive me cray cray
unless the story is meant to be relatively short (say 10 chapters) then it makes sense, but if it's a proper 20+ chaptered story i mean idk if it's done well but otherwise ~~~
