My boyfriend and I had a discussion about this when we first started dating, and he basically said everything you just said.
I have never found this stereotype to be true (THOUGH THAT'S NOT TO SAY THAT IT DOESN'T HAPPEN.), and I personally think the friendzone thing is WAY over-used/bllamed (THOUGH THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT A PERSON CAN'T FEEL LIKE THAT'S WHERE THEY ALWAYS END UP/SEEM TO ALWAYS END UP THERE.).
I think people should always try to look at things from all angles though, and try to see what they can change/what went wrong.
