One of my stories took on a life of its own, being plagiarized over 40 times (and that's just that I know about). It is ridiculous and some sites have inactive staff that never bother to read reports, no matter how many DMCA complaints you file.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. I have a lot of experience with this shit, unfortunately.

Holy shit, this is exactly what happened to me! Mine was posted on wattpad too, though I did submit a complaint and email them about the violation and they've taken it down, which is good on their part. You're right about the breaking the law thing though, it's totally wrong!

I know this feeling so well.

When I was thirteen, I started posting my Harry Potter fan fiction online. This was at the beginning of 2004. Those stories are still online, in their original place, where they still occasionally get readers. But they're terrible - they're badly written, my characters were cliché, there's no plot. So I never worried about them being stolen.

    Then three of them were.

They got posted to Wattpad - without my knowledge, without my permission. There were two separate authors behind it, and both of them clearly stated that the stories were not theirs, even going as far as to say that I was the original author: "[story title] by haylie_lupin", they said. That was my pen name back then.

And it frustrates me that people think this is okay. I don't care if you clearly state the work isn't yours. I don't care if you link back to the original author or give them credit in any other way. The moment you copy somebody's work without their permission - be it by reposting, by printing it - you are breaking the law. It is plagiarism, and you can be sued.

But let's face it. There's always going to be somebody who doesn't care, somebody who doesn't know what they're doing is wrong. I had the stories removed, so only my originals remain, but it made me think twice. Because this year I wanted to start posting my original work, and I'm a much better writer than I was back then.

    It's a hard life, being a writer.

Are you sure they've acknowledged it? Like, did they reply? If so, yeah they're an ass. It sucks how people can just do that.

I've commented and I reported them for copyright violation. It still hasn't been taken down though, so I think I wasted my time.. :/

    @ alonginginmybones

Been there, don't worry about it. There are always going to be people out there like that, but like you said put your work on lockdown and keep a sharp eye. People are always stealing other peoples' hard work. It's a complete pain in the ass. Chin up. Cool
