Goodness, that sounds a bit miserable. How long did they tell you that you would have your braces, altogether?

They haven't really given me any definitive information about my expander yet, just that it's coming and it'll move a millimeter at a time. I'm hoping that I won't have to wear it for too long, since I don't have any crowding (I have two teeth that have gone a bit wonky in the back, but I have two gaps in the front so it seems to even out). They just want to widen my arch enough to be able to bring my teeth back a little, and then (I'm guessing) it's rubber bands from there.

I'm glad to hear that it didn't hurt for you - hopefully my experience is the same! I can deal with talking funny and fishing food out...at least, I think I can.

Hmm, that's weird! It NEVER hurts for me when I turn it. Mine is for crowding in my upper set of teeth so maybe it's a totally different experience. I'll have to be wearing mine, they say, for a minimum of three months after the last time I have to turn it (so basically, an indefinite amount of time). When I got it put on I had to turn it twice in a row for twelve days and it didn't hurt at all. It just gave me a dizzy feeling for 10 or 15 minutes. A couple of weeks ago I went back to the ortho and they told me to turn it once a day for 12 days this time and it feels the same. The most annoying thing about it is that food gets caught in it and you have to suck the food out which is disgusting. Another annoying thing is that it fucks up your sinuses so I'm always sneezing and I'll randomly get sore throats and sinus headaches. But it's probably different for everyone. OH and the annoying lisp it gives you - it'll be bad at first, but after 3 or 4 days your tongue will get used to it. I still sound stupid when I talk sometimes but I'm understandable. Another thing I was worried about was kissing, but according to my boyfriend he can't even feel it! Also it gives you the ability to hiss like a cat which is cool lol.

My brother had an expander, and he said that it hurt ALL the time because he had to crank it so often (I think it was like once a week or something?)

If you don't mind my asking, how long will you have your expander and how often do you have to adjust it? Mine is to help with an overjet, so I'm a little worried about it.

I got my braces in October and it really hurt me, but besides that I didn't mind. I don't know anyone who's going to think your ugly or anything for having braces, honestly. The expander, though - I got that in December and it's so fucking ANNOYING. I hate it more than anything and I want it OUT. But it's not painful at least, and you'll get used to it. Good luck!
