My brother used to be a roadie when he was about 18 or 19 years old. It was more of a casual thing though, he never travelled around with bands or anything, he was just doing local places whenever they needed the staff. I can't remember how he got the job (could have been through one of his musician friends) but he was regularly working at the entertainment centres around town, or basically any larger venues that well known bands would usually play at. But it wasn't just concerts he worked on, he also set up for theatre productions, sporting events and even for the Olympics one year.
So I'm thinking that your best bet is to maybe go around to your local venues where these bands (likely during a concert or production) and speak to someone involved with the roadie crew and just express your interest and see where that goes. :)
Yeah, I did some research and you kind of have to be in that circle of people, to get a chance to do stuff like that and etc. so basically what you said. Also I could imagine myself just being an assistant and help out haha, maybe not just roadie stuff because I'm not very qualified for that kind of work with light setting, instruments etc. ^^
