My thoughts on this topic aren't even coherent, however, it is never acceptable to walk all over those whose job is to help you.

I know the feeling, I am also a cashier at Wally World and it's not always the best environment. People are nasty and rude, sorry you had to be at the end of the punching bag with those people. No ONE deserves to be treated as such. I've been insulted by someone before because I wouldn't put his bags in his car, that is not my job and that is not on my job description. Maybe for Kroger but not for Wal Mart. I just pack your things, on occasion I'll do it just to be polite or depending on what kind of customer I have. Calling me names and making me feel like shit isn't going to help your cause, t's going to make yourself [the customer] look like an ass in front of the other customers.

People like that grind my gears. Seriously.

It makes me so angry that you've had to deal with people like that. This is the reason why I'd probably be terrible in a job like that, because I'd end up having a full blown argument with them and I'd probably get fired. XD You're so strong for managing to stick through that.

And what they said to you about the 'attitude'? Ignore them. If they said anything else like that to you, ignore them. They are obviously people that aren't worth bothering with.

I'm ALWAYS polite with cashiers. If there's a problem, shouting at them isn't going to help anything because in most cases, it's not their fault and there's nothing they can physically do to fix the problem. So, I don't shoot the messenger. It makes sense.

That is so terrible! She had no right to snap at you, it's not like you decide the prices!
I don't buy stuff from grocery stores (only 14) but my mom and ad are always polite to the people working there. My dad often asks them how they are and how their day as been. I really like that about him and I will remember to do the same in future years!
And I always say please and thank you when I'm done with my purchase. It's just polite and kind.
I hope you've had a better day and that no one else treats you as rudely as she has! Hug

I've never worked as a cashier but as someone who works as a motel front desk agent, I can definitely understand how you feel when it comes to rude customers. There are a lot of customers who basically think they're entitled to everything. The way people treat 'low class workers' is ridiculous, it's almost like people don't realize these workers are still human and aren't perfect. v.v

I've had a lot of people who come in and yell at me because we don't have luxuries. We're barely a two star motel and these people are expecting the luxuries of a five star place. -3- They want everything $200+ for less than $80 and get mad when I attempt to explain to them why they cannot have that. They get mad when I explain to then things like pools, digital tv, and microwaves are luxuries and not rights. I think for a lot of people, it's seen as socially acceptable to abuse hotel workers. People use traveling as an excuse to treat us like crap and many times, these people know we can't say anything bad to them or else we'll be fired. The tiniest negative word can make us lose our jobs, we're always walking on glass and rude customers only make that glass thinner.

I'm sorry you had to deal with all of that. Arms Customers like that are truly terrible people. I know it's not easy but try your best not to let customers get to you. ^^

This. So much. I love that the comments are full of more horror stories haha.

I had a woman a few weeks ago that was suuuuch a pain in the ass. I work at a grocery store so after taking ages to pack each item as she put them up painfully slowly after being greeted instead of putting them up at the end of the belt like everyone else, the people behind her were already annoyed at the time she was taking. She then got her purse after screwing around in another bag of hers for ages and told me she wanted her total transaction to be $400. So I put it through and had to confirm with her how much change she was going to get (say, $320). And she went off at me.
'You're not listening to what I'm saying I said I wanted $400 out.'
'Do you want $400 on top of your shopping or do you want me to include your shopping in that $400?'
    'I want $400 out.'
By this time the transaction had timed out so I asked her to swipe her card again.
'Oh this is ridiculous you don't know what you're doing.'
She eventually swiped again and then went on and on about how she goes through every week and gets the same problem. Uhh... maybe you're the problem then? She wouldn't enter her PIN because she was bitching too long and it timed out AGAIN. She THEN went on about how she was going to be charged 3 times, which she wasn't, and told me this was stupid and hopeless and such.
After she finally paid and I was almost in tears she demanded that someone wheel her shopping down to her car for her. Like seriously?

I ended up having a panic attack. My supervisor said she'd take over for me next time she's in my line. I hate people like her. Hate.

I used to work as a cashier at a grocery store and it's not easy! People with horrible attitudes don't help one bit. Now, when I'm in line and people are being rude, I give them a piece of mind like I know most cashiers could. It's so not fair to project their unhappiness with a policy/company/price onto the cashier, they have nothing to do with the problem other than being the one who will try to help you fix it.

Amen sister! I work at a gas station and deal with people getting the worst attitudes over the stupidest things. The stories I could share. Ugh. It's most often because their card won't work outside for whatever reason so they come in all pissy and throw their card at us, or they fight with us over our ID policies. Snajdnsoajsbs. We're cashiers, at a corporate store. We don't set the rules or the prices. People can be so incredibly disrespectful amd treat cashiers like they're stupid because they're cashiers. It's ridiculous. I totally feel your pain. I've dealt with some people who've literally left me shaking I was so mad at them for their crappy attitude. I don't understand what they expect to accomplish by throwing things and cursing at people, especially people who are attempting to help them. I hope I'm a customer someday when I witness someone treating their cashier like that so I can give them a piece of my mind for once. Customers can really suck sometimes. Disgust

I worked the to-go counter at Chili's for awhile, there were honestly more mean people than nice people. If someone was nice and courteous I acted like I found a flippin' unicorn they were so rare! I'd do small things to get back at the bad people like barely fill their sides of sauce, crush their chips, over salt their food or water down their drinks. But it's hard to work as a straight cashier because there's nothing you can do to get them, you just have to let karma get them. I'm sorry you went through that!

This is the reason I hate retail. A couple of months ago, before I was promoted to supervisor at my store, this woman came in and was rude right off the bat. She clearly had an attitude when I was trying to help her, so I eventually called my manager over to help her look at the comforter she was looking at. When she got to the register and I rung her up, everything was fine until I told her her total. She immediately went off saying how it was too much. I had to literally go through every item she had and tell her the prices, then I reminded her that there is a sales tax. Even after all of that, she still was snappy and just plain rude. Eventually in the middle of her rantings, I turned and called for my supervisor and ignored her until my supervisor came up there. After that I bagged her things and told my supervisor I was going to the bathroom and yeah, I cried. I had gotten irritable customers before, but she was just rude for NO reason. The best part about it was, the woman had the nerve to say to me, "I worked as a cashier for 10 years I know how this works." That baffled me because if you know what it's like behind this counter, how dare you treat me the way you are?! It was so frustrating. Since that experience and since my promotion, I have built up a bit of a thicker skin. When people are rude, I just let them go on and run their mouths. I will still be nice and explain to them why something is the way it is, but to be honest, I just ignore them otherwise. If there was something else I was doing at the register, I finish that while they go off because I am not going to be tolerated being talked down to. You are an adult and I am a person and if you're not going to respect me, that's fine but I'm not going to let you treat me like crap. I just...I really hate retail lol. Sorry for my rant XD

Wow I am so sorry this happened to you :C

See, I work at GFS (Gordon's Food Service) and it is a bit fairly different there. I mean I rarely get VERY rude customers because everyone is very nice, including the employees. Our workforce is built to keep a comfortable environment. Of course we get the "rude" every now and then because...that is just how it is. We mostly get the most STUPID of people I have ever seen lol. But I deal with it because I have worked in Fast Food for 5 years of my life and GFS is my very first RETAIL job that I worked at about 10 months so far. It's a pretty fair job and basically a lot of people there are my family and our store isn't huge like others so its very easy to get around in.
We have those "point builders" like other places but for GFS, it is for Organizations and Businesses, which is why we are a huge marketing retail.
We support all the businesses around the area (most of them) and our food is basically at a restaurant portion (large portions like Sam's Club).
I love it there, I do.
But of course like every retail job, you are going to get those nasty cruel people that you are just going to have to put up with.
Best advice, like always, is to call the manager immediately because cashiers should not have to deal with that bullcrap.
It is the manager's duty to deal with the complaints.

So I am very very sorry you had to go through that :C
I had that many times in the past...very few times at GFS.
But chin up dear.....best way to look at it is to feel sorry for them that they have to be so cruel...but that is still fucked up that that lady did that.
I hope things get better <3

I'm sorry you had to deal with that. I know how this goes, being a cashier at a grocery store where people are EXTREMELY picky about price. I've gotten screamed at (when I say screamed, I mean SCREAMED), called names, complained about, mocked. You name it, it's happened to me. I try to remove myself from the situation, because most of the time these people are just terrible people who hate their lives and want to take it out on someone else, and that happens to be us. How long have you worked in customer service? Eventually I just let it stop bothering me, because if I let everything customers say get to me, I probably would have been fired by now.

I understand all customers are different, and maybe how rude they were isn't in the same realm as what I'm in, but I understand where you're coming from. And like I said, I'm so sorry this happened to you. That's the problem with people, they just don't understand their actions and how they affect people like us.

It reminds me of this one time where one of the cashiers I work with had two women coming through her line with WIC checks (checks given out by the government for low-income families that are EXTREMELY specific for what you can and can't buy--if you mess up the check your drawer is automatically off $20 because they charge a $9 plus the price of the check), and this cashier is fairly new and had basically no idea what she was doing. I was supposed to be going on break, but it was a Thursday, and Thursdays are always extremely busy, so I was asked to help her. First of all, these two women got everything wrong on their checks. The wrong milk, wrong eggs, wrong juice, wrong bread, wrong cheese. Just about everything was wrong. As I tried to calmly explain to them that we'd have to swap out the items because they didn't get the correct ones, they proceeded to scream at me, claiming that WIC is too hard to follow and "at Stop and Shop they just give it to us". Well, Dave's isn't Stop and Shop, and I really didn't feel like getting in trouble for this cashier's drawer being off. Long story (kind of) short, these two women screamed at the cashier and myself as I scrambled throughout the store to, essentially, redo their shopping while they had a crying baby.

I'm sorry it happened to you tonight, but I'm glad you made this post because it's important people know this stuff. Hug

This is a sad, sad truth about working in a customer service industry.

I worked at McDonald's for eight and a half years until I finally got a new job three weeks ago - and I can tell you, fast food restaurants get some of the worst customers you could ever think of.

I had my fair share of people who ordered their food, went away for half an hour, then came back and complained their fries were cold - and never mind that we didn't make the customer sit there with them for half an hour, we still had to replace them with fresh fries. Had a guy complain to my manager that his chicken burger wasn't fresh - when the meat had literally just come out of the oil, and everybody could see the steam rising off it.

I could go on and on with horror stories, but I'll just tell you this one: I was a crew trainer at my store. One night I was training a girl called Angela. It was her very first shift, I had her serving on front counter in the middle of a dinner rush, and she was doing very well considering. She wasn't going as fast as the rest of the workers, but by no means was she being slow. A couple came to order, and that was when things start going downhill.

The woman did most of the talking (it's always the woman, right?). Standing right beside my trainee, I heard every word the customer said, watched the make sure Angela put the order in right, etc. But somehow in the end, the woman claimed that we were getting the order wrong, that we were over-charging her, etc. I took over - read her order back to her, fixed up everything she said was wrong. Seeing that she was giving my trainee stink-eye, I said, "I'm sorry about that. It's her first day."

Customer then looks at me and says (I kid you not), "Well, I should be getting served by somebody better!"

The trainee took it very well, but I was fuming. I ended up calling my manager to finish the transaction. But my point is, some people just think that they're better than everybody else - that they deserve special treatment, that they should get the best, and they know that often if they complain enough, they'll get their own way.

I'm glad you stayed and finished the transaction instead of asking your manager to do it, and I'm glad the follow-up customer was so polite and tried to cheer you up. The sad fact is, one bad customer can ruin your entire day. They don't care that we can't fix their problems - they're going to take it out on us anyway.

I now work in a pet store. In the three weeks I've been there, I've had only two semi-nasty customers.

I think along with fast food chains, large department stores like Kmart often get targeted because people deem you unimportant. They think that if the best job you can get is there, then you must be an idiot or something. At least, that's my experience with things.

Stick it out. One day you'll have a fantastic job that never lets you down, and that witch won't even be a blip on the radar.

I get people complaining to me about prices all the time. I can't magically make it better. I do my best to be polite, but sometimes it gets super difficult. Anytime I'm at a store, I always be nice to the cashiers/associates because I know how it is. I hope for you it gets better

I was a cashier for a brief amount of time, and it was the worst experience I've ever had. There were so many times I left work either in tears, or so livid that I wanted to strike someone. I think everyone should have to work retail at least a day in their lives so they understand the importance of treating us employees kindly. We're still human beings, trying to get through our shifts so we can lodge a paycheck. None of us deserve to get our heads bitten off for things we can't control. I'm sorry you had to endure that today. I hope you get a handful of nice customers soon!! Arms

As a fellow cashier who works in fast food, some people are just unbelievably rude! It use to really upset me but I stopped taking it personally and accept that they are the one with a problem. If you know you're being kind and respectful, never let a miserable jerk make you question that.

What the hell? I don't understand how people can be so genuinely malevolent. Like you said, it wasn't just this isolated incident where they thought you made a mistake and got angry about it, they had to just perpetuate the problem and be even more nasty and tell the managers to kill themselves? Honestly what the goddamn fuck. How are people THAT awful? Even if they were having a bad day or something...still. This isn't like someone flipped you off on the highway or something. That's the worst customer story I've ever heard, I'm so sorry that happened to you. No one deserves to be treated like that. At least the lady after them was nice. It's people like that that give me hope.

Another Kmart closing. Mine closed in January. I started out as a cashier and it was okay. Most of the customers were nice.

We did a ten to forty percent off or maybe it was up to thirty....but anyways we had all these price signs up showing people what the prices would be and they had to tell us the percent price.

Well I was working as a cosmetics merch at that point. i was only a cashier for a few weeks.

Anyways I'm sorry that happened to you. It's best not to argue with customers. Just their nasty attitude alone holds up the line and telling them anything in a nice way will only makes them mad. But as they say in the retail industry, they're probably just having a bad day. And I guess her's was just.......awful or something. she was looking for a fight from the sounds of it.
