When Is a Good Time to Start a New Story? - Comments

  • Myself? Personally? I normally strike while the iron is hot just for the sake of bringing the idea to the table. Now? I keep the idea in my head and just let it take more shape before I complete take it to town. I have too many stories as it is to finish before I can start the newest items.

  • As someone that's married and a mother, I find it difficult to set aside the time to write but I make myself do it because it's something I enjoy doing and it helps me unwind after a stressful day dealing with my toddler or trying to work out bills and what gets paid when. Like, it's just nice to have that escape. I try to keep a regular update schedule but it's really difficult because I just seem to STAY busy and it makes me feel like I'm suffocating. I usually keep a OneNote up n my phone and jot down whatever's on my mind before I forget it and work it into the story later when I get a moment to

  • I used to start/intend on starting my stories as soon as I had a layout and the first chapter written, regardless if I had anything else planned out or not. Nowadays, given the pace of my updating lately, all of my other ideas are on hold until I have a reasonable percentage of my current 2 main stories complete. It doesn't feel right for me to have 5+ stories running at a time when I know I can't give all of them enough attention simultaneously to get each updated regularly.

  • I always start a new story when it's all I can think about, even if I'm busy. Facepalm

It's never a good time to start a new story but you always have to get it out quick before the moment passes.

  • If you're really busy and literally have no time to start on the idea, I'd say compromise so that you need not lose your amazing idea. Write it down, start planning it out in your free time and then when you do finally have free time, you start writing from what you've planned.

That is the ideal way to start a new story when busy. For me, I procrastinate the things that need to be done and start on the new story in a document and then rush to get my other things completed in time.
