I don't know where you live now, but if you're speaking of America, we live in an individualistic society where it really is a mentality of "fend for yourself" and it isn't really all that expected to help others out. Nor is it really praised by media much either. America is usually focused more on negative messages. And some of it has to do with the parenting.
It's sad. But I take joy in those who've kept their genuine and kind humanity.
