As for your date, that's his problem not yours , I can halfway say things come up but that's just rude to make plans then not come or even call to apologize. Unless something like really devastating or pressing happen at least to me he has no excuse and I mean someone better have died or he's going into hiding to save his life because that's the only reasons you shouldn't be able to call or even text their than he's hurt and can't move.
