I love reading and definitely try to leave comments, now I know to be even more in depth when leaving them! I don't think all readers know to do this, I didn't realize. Also some stories I follow I honestly can't even remember the last update so I tend to have to go back through and re-read things and then I get to the new update & not to be mean but sometimes it can be pretty short or even just like a filler and sometimes writers even say that & truly the only comment that can be left or may be felt is an "OMG I can't wait for more, so excited for the update! I wonder what will happen with such and such" not super long but I think when stories begin to develop & readers gain some sort of attachment or like/affection for some characters, that builds & allows for folks to be able to state things about the characters as though they know them, if this makes sense? Or even the understanding of the genre and type of story & maybe be more vocal on what they think or feel. Also sometimes writers go on a hiatus from a story, is my perception, & it's just frustrating & it'll be an awesome story & it will be asked when they'll update or it will be said, we miss this story!
Just some thoughts, keep writing! I hope you don't get discouraged from writing!!! I'm glad you said this though because personally I didn't know writers necessarily wanted folks to be overtly critical or voice how they would want the story to go or things! Because it's the writers story and meant to tell something and be their own expression is how I look at it. But again, definitely glad you asked the question and also explained this.
Anywho, on a different but related note, I know a lot of people feel that because their work isn't getting commented on that it isn't good or people don't enjoy reading it (I know I feel like that sometimes) so I wanted to let you know that if nothing else, I got a pretty good laugh out of the cat GIF at the end of this post, so... that's something. :)
