I usually try to comment on just about everything I read. I may not be the most in depth person when it comes to my comments, but like you said, I at least try to give an author something to feel proud of.

Anywho, on a different but related note, I know a lot of people feel that because their work isn't getting commented on that it isn't good or people don't enjoy reading it (I know I feel like that sometimes) so I wanted to let you know that if nothing else, I got a pretty good laugh out of the cat GIF at the end of this post, so... that's something. :)

I love reading and definitely try to leave comments, now I know to be even more in depth when leaving them! I don't think all readers know to do this, I didn't realize. Also some stories I follow I honestly can't even remember the last update so I tend to have to go back through and re-read things and then I get to the new update & not to be mean but sometimes it can be pretty short or even just like a filler and sometimes writers even say that & truly the only comment that can be left or may be felt is an "OMG I can't wait for more, so excited for the update! I wonder what will happen with such and such" not super long but I think when stories begin to develop & readers gain some sort of attachment or like/affection for some characters, that builds & allows for folks to be able to state things about the characters as though they know them, if this makes sense? Or even the understanding of the genre and type of story & maybe be more vocal on what they think or feel. Also sometimes writers go on a hiatus from a story, is my perception, & it's just frustrating & it'll be an awesome story & it will be asked when they'll update or it will be said, we miss this story!
Just some thoughts, keep writing! I hope you don't get discouraged from writing!!! I'm glad you said this though because personally I didn't know writers necessarily wanted folks to be overtly critical or voice how they would want the story to go or things! Because it's the writers story and meant to tell something and be their own expression is how I look at it. But again, definitely glad you asked the question and also explained this.

I know that one of my things is that I haven't been on Mibba due to my role playing threads on tumblr, BUT i always check back here sporadically. Updating stories was one of the greatest feelings when I first joined Mibba because I knew I'd have at least six or seven people commenting on it. Nowadays, I'm lucky if I get one or two, and it entirely disenheartens me. I want the times back where I was excited to go on Mibba and see how many comments I got, not like now where I see an orange notification and I'm blown away.

I think the Recommend feature, while helpful, really destroyed the idea of comments. Now instead of commenting, everyone Recommends. And it really doesn't take that long to leave a simple comment, even if exaggerated. As authors, we really can't tell the difference between something like a lengthy, in-depth comment and a "this is so good please update!" comment. It's words of encouragement, and it's always going to motivate us to do better.

I think my problem is that I feel like I need to leave a super great, indepth comment and then if I can't I just don't comment. I've definitely been trying to comment more though, because you just don't see very many people commenting anymore.

I try my best to comment, even if its a small comment like. Your doing amazing, because even a small comment counts for something. I notice that alot of thing are lacking on mibba. The layout/banner feed. It thrieved in the beginning, now your lucky if you get a layout back in a month. (Yes I know people have lives) lol. The comments as well, someone will comment and then. Never comment again. Also story updates, call me greedy but I love it when a story is update at least a few times in a month. Some people update once a month and it drives me mad because they are awesome writers! So when ever they update I try to comment or even go back and beg for an update lol. The other lack is the story comment thread, people go expecting comments but people never comment. You want something then give something. It's like we are given these awesome things and people just want instead of giving.

    Totally ranted there! Lol sorry

This is why I hardly write anymore or read things anymore because no one seems to like giving out comments, I mean when i do read a story, I do comment on it and I even try giving a solid review so people can not only feel good about their stories but also see a few mistakes that they can iron out of their stories as they continue on with writing their stories.

Lack of feedback is why I started my monthly giveaways and Rec Blogs... I try and leave a comment on everything that I check out :)

Well explained! I also think that Rachael raised good points; especially about the effort and choice each author makes to post their story or keep it private. How many of us feel reluctant to post our new stories because we feel/know that they won't receive many reads or comments? This would be an interesting poll to see the results for - especially if we then divided the results between old and new users.

I'm not overly bothered about receiving comments on my work personally because I know I'm a lazy piece of cardboard, but I too find it quite disheartening to see lengthy or even short but fantastically written stories with no or little comments. Lots of people here are so passionate about their writing while I'm just a blogger so I don't think I have the best comments to offer but I enjoy reading a good story and trying to feedback what I liked about it, how it made me feel and what I thought could be improved too.

I only know to do this because of the kind people who commented on mine! So if one person drops a comment somewhere it might encourage that author not only to keep writing/make improvements but also to comment on the story of another - they might even return the favour.

This drives me insaaaaaane. There's this whole idea that if you expect comments then you're annoying or stuck up or whatever and that you should write for yourself etc. But like, why bother posting things online for people you never ever hear from? I cannot understand, looking at my subs and readers for each chapter how there are these people that literally sub and read the whole story through and never comment or even rec. How do these people not feel like absolute crud for that? Or do they not write and not understand how important comments are to keep someone bothering to update and post? Like there's this whole mentality that creativity ought to be free, be it writing, music, art, photography etc. People don't think they should have to pay for it with money or comments or whatever else and I just don't understand.

I comment on literally every single story I've read and enjoyed. If I'm subbed to something and haven't commented yet it's because I have yet to read it. I don't understand how it's just so hard for some people to take 5 seconds to simply say 'this is great!' to give back to the author that is bothering to post online something that they could easily just write and keep for themselves.

I agree! Sad everyone should comment more, mibba just isn't the same anymore without that interaction between fellow authors and just writing admirers.
