Since When Was Fanfiction "Inappropriate"? - Comments

  • The article seems to have been deleted? Good riddance!

It disgusts me that there are people out there who can be so close minded as to write things like that. And then, as you said, to go and link the works that they're referring to? They're probably hoping that those works get negative feedback - but do they realise they're also just giving those writers more exposure? I hope it backfired on them.

This reminds me of a time, many years ago, when I used to write on a tiny fan fiction site called FanWorks. I was writing A7X fan fic at the time, and suddenly this obscure little interview with the band came out - in which the interviewer had taken two summaries off of FanWorks, read them to the guys in the band, and asked them what they thought about fan fiction.

Of course, the interviewer took the most ridiculous sounding summaries he could find (I don't say this in a bad way, but there were a lot of better-sounding summaries he could have chosen from), and he was obviously expecting the band to be disgusted. No doubt he thought fan fiction was disturbing.

To the band's credit, they weren't disturbed by the notion of fan fiction - but they were irritated at the way the interviewer had asked them about it. So that backfired on him pretty hard.

Point is, there will always be haters out there. Fan fiction writers just need to stick together and known that they're doing nothing wrong. And as for the impressionable teen writers, we should support them every step of the way. Like you said, they're trying to express themselves. Many of them are trying to figure out who they are. The last thing they need is for some idiot to come in and tell them that they're wrong, dirty, etc. That's just...ugh. Some people need to have their keyboards taken from them.

I'm going to stop ranting now. But thank you for writing a quality blog on this subject. <3

  • i can't believe the author had the audacity to link those works. she was setting up the platform for her readers to agree with her, head off with their ill-fitting internet warrior attire, and stab at fics that clearly took a lot of time and effort. what she did was plain awful, and i know, personally, if it was one of my fics up there, it would make me feel like shit. i put my heart into writing out a fic just to have it thrown on a pedestal to be mocked and ridiculed and called "nasty AF." i can only imagine what the actual authors felt stumbling upon their work displayed in such a disgusting manner.

the author of the article jumped into shaming another set of fics before, it seems, this time a little closer to the fandom i write in. (though i do occasionally read teen wolf fics as well, so if her goal was to make the readers feel like shit, too, she got me, at least for a bit). she threw quite a few fifth harmony fanfics under the bus, and me writing in the one direction fandom, i can only assume our time isn't exactly far off. Facepalm i can't wait to see "13 Larry Stylinson Fanfics That Are Plain F***ing Disgusting and Wrong! That Means You, Too, Fans!" before she edits yet another title out of fear. maybe some of my favorites will be there. :-)

she still keeps up the same nasty attitude, too, and on a website aimed at teenagers? when a lot of fanfic writers are, oh, i dunno, probably teenagers? i like how she seems to only pull out slash / femmeslash fics, as well; why are they more disgusting than any stiles x lydia smut fic out there, or any camila x harry smut fic? because it's ~*slash*~? pulling out other people's hard work to try and get your crew to laugh alongside you isn't cute, silly, or really anything but plain nasty. all this does is try and shame smut writers, or slash writers in general. is it hurting you? ah, yeah, didn't think so. so shut up, write another article about taylor swift as you so do and stop trying to damage creative writers. if you're going to shine your dimming spotlight on a piece of the internet that is already side-eyed, try and do it in a positive manner or you're going to come across just as trashy as you want those works to be perceived.

i personally have never written any slash smut (bar one practice run) because i don't feel i fully have a grasp on it so. lmfao but i do read it, and i know darling people who write it, and i write slash all the time. that is about 95% of my fic makeup. and just reading that article made me think 'wow, okay, maybe this is wrong? for me to enjoy this? how many other people think i'm gross for this?' did the author just think like-minded people would click and read that clickbait bullshit? did she not think that maybe, just maybe, lgbtqia+ teens would find this and think, "damn, if slash stories are disgusting, what am i?" did she not care? it appalls me that she went as far as to link them all and leave a good little excerpt of their "disgusting" content. how dare you?

i think i lost the plot of this whole comment; i tried to stay calm seeing red and it gave me a probably disjointed ramble. XD for her to do this twice kind've shows she's got nothing better to do than shame and poke fun.....so.....does she really need such a platform? maybe out her behind the scenes. make her janitor for a bit.

(and for the record, each excerpt of a tw fic and/or 5h fic she tried to have everyone take the piss out of seemed to take much more time and effort than her little piece of drivel anyhow. File)

sorry this got so long, holy crap! i hope you're having a nice day! Cute
