See, my absolute favourite artists are kinda different, I guess -- I'll always listen to their lyrics because I do adore their takes on life -- but if it's someone I only casually listen to, I'm more likely to fade the lyrics away. Definitely something I need to stop doing. Facepalm

    @ exploding boy.
I'm very glad I could help you change your views on this kind of topic. I used to be the same, not really knowing what the lyrics of my favorite songs were but then I learned to listen and not let music fade into the background of my daily life and I actually found that a lot of the lyrics I was listening to were beautiful, more beautiful than I had ever imagined so I always think it's a wonderful opportunity for people to actually take he time to listen/read lyrics because they could be potentially harmful or degrading to a group of people that are historically already mistreated.

I actually never thought about this before but after reading your blog, I'm actually pretty disgusted with myself for not realising in the past. I listened to Eminem a lot growing up as a kid and obviously, you don't take stock of lyrics when you're younger. I definitely think it'd be interesting to see how those lyrics affected mty growth as a kid because that sort of stuff definitely isn't what I should have been listening to at all. Looking at his lyrical content now, I'm definitely considering just removing all of his stuff off of my iPod -- not that I listen to him often anyway nowadays, but it does come on shuffle occasionally.

I don't know if it's been my background in music theory, but I'm absolutely the kind of person who disregards lyrics and goes straight for harmonies and melodies and backing instruments in a song. I very rarely pay attention to lyrics when I'm listening to music and I guess maybe I should start more. Eminem's songs go against every single one of my moral standpoints when I look into it, and it's kind of horrible to realise that I've effectively been supporting him in making up a whole back catalogue of mindless hate by listening to his music and just not paying enough attention to what's going on in the foreground. Musicians have a degree of freedom that they can work with, but when it's hating on a group of people (be that women, PoC or members of the LGTB+ community) then it's not exercising creative freedom, it's just wrong. Music is absolutely one of my favourite things (it'd have to be, I studied the damn subject at university level) and it kind of makes my heart hurt to see people abusing it in this way. Musicians have so much more influence than they might realise and it's worrying to think about what his lyrics might inspire the men of our world to think is okay. I shudder to think about that at all, actually. People seem to think sometimes that if a musician sings about something, it's immediately okay and it makes me sick to my stomach when I look at the lyrical content of some of the music nowadays.

Thank you for your input, but I would really appreciate it if you do not refer to women as females. I used the word woman because that's who they are, women and men and everyone in-between are not defined by their sex.

It's very distressing to me that as a mother, you're not bothered by his aggression towards women...imagine if you were Kim and your daughter was their daughter, growing up with a song in pop culture about how your dad wants to kill your mom and have you and him dump her body...that's over aggression.

There is more music out there that is about anger and aggression than women hating men who want to kill women.

I will very much like it if you do not comment on anymore of my blogs.

This is a really good blog. Everything you've stated is correct, and I cannot and will not argue with the facts you've put down. It's all true.
However, I am a fan of old Eminem, and I'll explain why.

I'm a pretty angry person. Eminem sing's and write terrible lyrics, about terrible things. However I find comfort when I'm angry listening to those songs. I am mad, I want to hear that someone is just as mad as me, is just as pissed off about stuff as me. I'd comforting to know that there is someone out there with just as much rage at the world, at my family and at others as me. I would never go out and intentionally do anything to anyone, however it's nice to sometimes hear those things vocalized. I connect with the anger he portrays. Then again, I can also say he is completely deranged. I wouldn't ever try to defend anything he says/does or anything like that. There's just no way to at all without looking crazy, because it is crazy.

He is an overly violent person mentally, as am I. So I get where he comes from in that respect, not defending him, just saying. I also acknowledge his hatred of women, and being a woman that doesn't bother me personally, he's got a shit ton of baggage and imo it's his right to sing about it, so long as he's not doing anything about it. I personally abhor all those females who sing about ex boyfriend's and whatnot, but they're allowed to do that as well despite my objections to it.

At the end of the day, He is just a terrible person, who I can relate to when I'm mad. That being said, I would never play his music around my daughter. However if she hears him herself when she grows up, I am no one to stop her from listening, I can only explain things as I see them and let her make up her own mind. We have to remember as well that singing is his living basically, and I don't listen to new Eminem because I know everything he's putting out now is legit just shock value stuff in order to make sales. He doesn't have his heart in the anger now, he's just putting out stuff to stay relevant.

Like I said, No excuses and I'm not gonna argue about it, just wanted to post my perspective as a fan who knows how terrible he is. :)

I totally understand people's need to express themselves but I do not think condoning self expression that is hurtful to other people/threatening is acceptable.

It's so horrible that most rap is about violence against women/uses harmful language towards women (calling women c*nts, b*tches, wh*res) and no one says any thing and when I say that, I really mean people don't pay attention when people call out rappers. It's sad we live in a society that freedom of speech is still protecting men rapping about killing and raping women.

I've hardly listened to Eminem anyways because I can't stand rap... a friend of mine who was a major Eminem fan made me listen to a good majority of his albums/songs back in 2007ish (the ones he had out until then) and all the BS in those songs... It unsettled me. It's because Eminem sings about rape, violence, and murdering women and gays that I refuse to listen to him. I get that rap is a type of music and music is an art form and a form of self-expression, but it's surprising that a lot of people turn a blind eye/deaf ear to his death threats and violence against women in his songs. :/

like I never listened to half of his songs, just a few certain ones. But from what you posted, yikes. Violence against Women is never okay. *insert mean things here* but seriously, so disrespectful.

I'm so happy I could inform someone about this. I know a lot of people aren't talking about him because it's so tiring to keep repeating the horrible things he's done.
