I had braces for a few years. I had to get 4 teeth pulled - 3 wisdom teeth that hadn't come in yet and one molar that had a filling. He pulled the molar so that the other teeth could be moved over to fill in the gap and then my one wisdom tooth would come in to cover the gap at the back. Worked really well. I didn't have any extra teeth or anything though. My teeth are now much much better than they were though not totally straight as I stopped wearing my retainer out of laziness.
