Rap and Poetry....the same thing?

Seriously, the majority of the kids in my class love rap (I'm not part of the majority). But whenever they hear the word "poetry" they're all like "ewww!! poetry sucks!" I don't understand this because aren't poetry and rap basically the same thing? They're both all about rhyming.

Also, they're always like "Maddie...you don't like rap? WHAT? HOW CAN IT NOT BE CONSIDERED MUSIC?" I don't find rap appealing at all because it's degrading and it requires no singing talent whatsoever. Therefore, it's not considered music in my mind.
