some guy problems...i need help

so i've liked this one guy for a long long time. i mean, it's been, like, three years. and i have never, NEVER, spoken to him in my life. he doesn't even know i exist. plus, he's a year older than me. so is there any possible way to ever talk to him and get to know him? he's in none of my classes at school, i see him in the halls a few times, but other than that i don't really see him. how do i make him notice me? or do i just give up and move on?
okay, so the real question being: How do I talk to someone I have never talked to before without making it seem weird.
btw, i'm really really shy. i can't just walk up to someone and become instint friends.
help please?
