Stereotypes

Omg. I can't believe how racist and one sided people are today. Well scratch that we're not that racist and there's no segregation but pretty much everything ideal is pictured as white. Asians are known for their smarts, blacks are the poor people in the ghetto, and Latinas are the manual labor grouped in with blacks as criminals and druggies. The truth is that many people actually do fit their stereotype. And I'm speaking as a proud African American with a Hispanic last name and enough Japanese blood to let it show (about1/4). Stereotypes are there for a reason and that’s because it’s been drilled into our heads that these things are true (even if it’s unintentional). Sometimes stereotypes are self serving. You become what you think you are and if people expect you to be a certain way it can skew your image of yourself to fit what they expect to see. Sometimes certain looks just unconsiously makes you refer to certain stereotypes. Like if your lost your more likely to ask a white person for directions than a black person and likewise more likely to ask an Asian than a white (or I am). It's not that I'm racist it's that society embeds these things in you while it puts on the outward face of being open to everybody equally. I really don't think it’s anybody’s "fault" that we think this way it’s just that once stereotypes are in place it’s hard to get rid of them. I mean isn't it true that when you think of businessman you think white not the successful others and when you think ghetto you think black not the white trash. Also pretty much every school stereotype you picture as white. But there’s a reason for that. Whites make up a much bigger part of our American population than any other nationality so it sort of makes sense that stereotypes would shift towards white. I go to a predominantly white school and the lines do blend but you can see that blacks tend to hang with blacks, Asians with Asians and whites can hang with anyone because there are just so damn many of them. There are barely any blacks and Latinas though. Honestly though America is great because there really are very little limitations on people if you’re willing to work. As a black person I'm nearly always the only black in my classes because I’m very smart and take advanced classes. Sometimes I feel out of place but I’m definitely not the stereotyped black person so I never try to act black like some people because I haven’t had the experiences and hardships that define black people. Really I consider myself more stereotypical white even though my skin may be one color I can act however I feel is the right way to act for me. I hope I'm not bashing anybody and arguments are welcome
