What makes you want to read a story?

I'm writing a new story and I would like to get some advice on what makes you actually click on that first chapter and read the story? What in the description makes you stay or leave?

Does it have a to have a banner?
Does the banner have to have actual characters in it or just a banner in general?
Long description?
Short description?
Fancy background?
A bright background or a dark background?

I'm also curious to know what you look for in the first chapter that makes you subscribe/comment and begging for more?

You'll be helping me out greatly, and maybe helping other writers who are trying to fix their story's or gain more readers.

(If someone would, once I get done with my first chapter would anyone like to pre-read it? Telling me it's crap or not?)
