I don't want to fall in love!

Well,I invited my freind,Ashley,over for a sleepover.
Then she told me if I wanted to go with her somewhere.I said sure.
We went over to her guy freinds house.His name was Zach.
We hung out for a bit,and he's a really good guy.
Ashley wanted us to go out.I didn't want that.
Then we went back to my house,and apparently,Zach wanted to go out with me.
It hit me in the head like a bowling ball;I didn't know how to handle it.
Because the truth is,I don't want to fall in love.And he wasn't my type.At all.I mean,he's a great friend,but he's into sports and stuff.He's country.I'm into grunge and punk rock.I'm liberal.We're COMPLETELY different.
Since I didn't know how to handle it,I just walked away,breaking his heart.
Then he went home crying.

What should I do?Should I go out with him so he won't get his heart broken?Or should I just go and explain to him why I don't want to go out with him?
I just hate hurting people.
