JUST FOR SAM (:

The one purpose of this journal entry is so my loverrrly friend Sam can find me, and I'll delete it once she has...

hope that wasted 100 characters |: it didn't.
I'll just post some of my history notes to fill up the rest.

Terra Nullius - was the legal concept that gave the British the right to occupy Australia.
- Over time each of the 6 colonies had developed in different ways. Each had their own agenda:
• NSW wanted free trade to benefit agricultural industry.
• Victoria wanted tariffs to protect manufacturing industries.
• South Australia had never transported convicts sent + here --------> more progressive ---------> first to give women the vote.
• Queensland brought in Pacific Islanders (Kanakas) to work on the cane fields. Other colonies apposed non-European migration.

Arguments in favour of Federation.
- Economic - tariffs would be removed, goods would be cheaper, business would benefit as would overseas trade and investment.

Defence - European powers already in Pacific and South-east Asia. Germany interested in New Guinea. Some Australians feared these other nations.
