• Collision created the ural mountains
• China was formed with collision of several microcontinents and Siberia
• collision between Gondwana and Laurasia formed the Appalachian belt in North America & the Hercynian Mountains in Europe
• marked by marine deposits, conclusion that shallow seas covered large areas
• amount of land exposed to the air increased
• This increase probably due to plate tectonics and to the thickening of the crust
