I don't understand O_o

Why do people judge your layouts? Do layouts make you guys want to read it more or what? See, I made this background that me and my co-author liked for our story Turtle (check it out sometime) and it's all blue and green with a picture of a turtle in the back. We both figured it was fitting for the basic meaning of the story. But I'd like to know if it really does bother readers if they don't like the backgrounds. Or if it were just that one reader, I probably won't change the layout because personally I love it. But I just wanted to know what everyone thought.
