Story based on a recent circumstance, good or bad idea?

I've been told that writing from an experience, or taking inspiration from everyday things is a good idea...but, I have this new story idea I recently thought of. But the problem is if family see it i'll be a dead duck. This idea comes from a horrible incident that recently happened in the family, is it wrong for me to write a story based on it? Or is it a good thing?

Confused? I sincerly apologise. Is it a good idea to go ahead with the story? or just drop it?
Need some advice if it's not too much trouble.
