Need Hooper Help

Hi there, are you a hooper? As in you mix hula hooping with tricks and dance moves? I'm on a beginner level but I'm pretty decent and the song Kill The DJ by Green Day has inspired me to make a hoop video for it. Only problem is my lifts are terrible. I want to lift the hoop off of my waist and into a lasso move above my head but I never get it right. I either can't let go and my wrist gets twisted or I fail on lifting my arm and smack myself in the face. I've been looking up tutorials online and in class today I was able to do it once, but I just can't seem to get it down.

Is there any good advice on how a failwhale such as myself can get this lift right? Words of encouragement will also help. Thank you.
