Suolun Pole

Suolun Pole

Written by Judy Feng Liu

Shenyang was a capital at the beginning of the Qing dynasty. There is a red pole in the Shenyang Imperial Palace, which called Suolun Pole.

It was a utensil for offering sacrifice only used during the Qing Dynasty.

About this kind of sacrifice, there was a legend. And because of this legend, the Manchu didn’t eat dog’s meat and offered a kind of bird once they offered sacrifice.

It is said that at the end of the Ming Dynasty, a local official in the east of the Liaodong(one of the provinces in that time) knew that Nurhachi(the first emperor of the Qing Dyansty)has seven moles on his feet.

But in one of Chinese legends if a man who has seven moles on his feet, this man will be the emperor. So, this official commanded to kill Nurhachi.

Nurhachi was rounded up on the top of a small mountain by an army of the Ming Dynasty. And then that official ordered to set the mountain on fire. He meant to make Nurhachi dead in the fire.

But, Nurhachi was escaped from this tragedy.

So, how did he escape from it? What connections between this fire and the tradition of not eating dogs by Manchu? Why did Manchu would offer that kind of bird to sacrifice? Please let Judy tell you when come to Shenyang.
